Authorities are closely monitoring the movements of a mysterious Chinese vessel known as the “Yi Peng 3,” which may be connected to a suspected sabotage operation. This development follows the recent destruction of two significant underwater communication cables linking Finland to Germany and Lithuania to Sweden.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has stressed the seriousness of the situation, stating, “No one believes that these cables were cut by accident. I also don’t subscribe to theories suggesting that ship anchors caused the damage to the cables.” His comments reinforce concerns that the cable damage was likely intentional rather than accidental.

The role of the “Yi Peng 3”
Reports indicate that the “Yi Peng 3” passed close to the damaged cables on Sunday, then reduced its speed and drifted near the site. Carl-Oskar Bohlin, Sweden’s Civil Defence Minister, confirmed, “We can verify that military and Coast Guard units have detected vessel movements matching the timing and location of the disruptions.”

Tracking data from Vesselfinder reveals that the “Yi Peng 3” spent several days at a Russian port before navigating southward through the Baltic Sea. Currently, the vessel is heading towards the Kattegat.

Sounds like an act of Piracy on the High Seas.  The vessel should be seized or sunk.  It's captain and crew put on trial.

Throughout history, Russia has desired to make the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea into Russian lakes.

This incident appears to be pre-emptive sabotage against NATO Baltic communications.  Finland, Germany, Lithuania, and Sweden are Baltic NATO countries.

I long suspectd that Russia had a plan to cut underwater sea cables as an asymetrical battlefront.  Putin must have outsourced that to the Chi-coms for plausible deniability.

Did China and Russia combine to sabotage European telecoms in retaliation over the war in Ukraine? Or did the Yi Peng 3 just show up at the right place and the wrong time?

No one knows for sure, but the Danish Navy doesn't believe in coincidences. They chased down the Chinese-flagged vessel all the way to just outside of Danish waters, according to Visegrad 24, which also reports that the Danes boarded the vessel:

How did the ship get identified so quickly? Other ships were in the same area at the same time, but the Swedes believe that only the Yi Peng 3 matched the movements and timing of the sabotage:

That latter would require three pieces of knowledge:

* When the cables were cut;

* Where the cables were cut;

* What ships were nearby.

The timing would be obvious, the point in time when comms were interrupted. The where took a little time - hours or days - and the who could be determined from the timing and location using merchant vessel traffic-control tracking data.
