Ukraine Believes it Can Build its Own Nuclear Bombs From Spent Fuel Rods in Months: Report

Ukraine has the resources and expertise to indigenously produce a large quantity of nuclear weapons at short notice if it was forced to do so, a briefing document meant for top government figures allegedly says, a report states.

A briefing produced for the Ukrainian defence ministry allegedly explaining to policy makers that the country could rapidly develop rudimentary nuclear bombs from spent fuel rods and long-range ballistic missiles to carry them states this could be achieved in just months.

Claimed as an exclusive by The Times of London, the document is presented by the newspaper as illustrating a potential backstop for the country to defend itself from the Russian Federation if the United States under a Trump Presidency withdrew military support. President Trump has made clear he wishes to bring peace to Europe quickly, but has not yet revealed how. Many of the options open to him do not align with the official Kyiv policy as the only acceptable end to the war being total victory over Russia.

Did Oliver JJ Lane ever get around to mentioning how many times Russia threatened to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine? I'm not giving a click to that misleadingly-headlined article.

Ukraine likely has a few somehat stable Soviet-era cores in storage. Or they're lying.

Either way, all is fair when fighting the accursed Russian Empire.

Pretty sure Ukraine has no Soviet nukes left.  That was part of the deal in the 1990s.

Funny, it would not surprise me if Ukraine bought some of Russia's "lost" nuclear weapons, cores, or precursors. And I'm sure the Russians who did the deal are happy about it!

Pretty sure they don’t have any nuclear weapons-related material left over from the Soviet era.  That was the point of the 1997 deal.


If they’ve bought anything later on, that would be a different kettle of fish.

I think we/ they should be more concerned about the number of "dirty bombs" they can make using spent cores. Chernobyl effects with out the advanced technology.

Ukraine has (had) some 15 reactors on line at the start of hostilities, and mined and processed about 30% of the fuel for those reactors.
Between highly radioactive materials left lying about poorly (or un-) reclaimed mine sites, and spent fuel, they would have ample material for 'dirty bombs'.
As for building their own fission devices, I would not sell them short, even though there is no present indication they have done so.
