Amsterdam police said early Friday that at least five people had been injured and at least 62 people arrested after the violence following a soccer match Thursday night between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Ajax.

At least five people were injured and at least 62 people arrested in “violent incidents” in the Dutch capital Amsterdam, police said Friday, after what authorities in both countries said was violence targeting Israeli soccer fans.

Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema’s office described the events following the Europa League match between Dutch giants Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv, which the hosts won 5-0, as "very turbulent, with several incidents of violence aimed at Maccabi supporters."

Videos circulating on social media and geolocated by NBC News showed violence in the city’s streets. Video geolocated by NBC News also showed Maccabi Tel Aviv fans in Amsterdam singing “Death to the Arabs” and “Let the IDF win. We will f*** the Arabs,” as well as tearing down a Palestinian flag. ...

Israel’s embassy in Amsterdam said fans of the Maccabi Tel Aviv soccer team were “ambushed and attacked” after a match in the city as “mobs chanted anti-Israel slogans and proudly shared videos of their violent acts on social media.”

Video shared on social media that was geolocated by NBC News to near Amsterdam’s central station appeared to show people chasing others and physically assaulting them. ...

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday asked his counterpart in the Netherlands to provide more security for Israelis after fans of the Maccabi Tel Aviv FC  soccer team were attacked on Thursday by anti-Israel protesters.

Israeli air carrier El Al is sending planes to Amsterdam on Shabbat to evacuate Israelis, after the Israeli Defense Forces said it was standing down on a plan to "immediately deploy a rescue mission" to the city.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry said that up to 20 of its nationals were injured while seven others remain unreachable since the attacks.

"The police have launched a major investigation into multiple violent incidents. So far, it is known that five people have been taken to the hospital and 62 individuals have been arrested," Amsterdam Police said in a statement.

Wow, an incredible story about an Arab hero from last night who saved many Jews from being lynched.

Melhem Asad, a longtime fan of Maccabi Tel Aviv who was at the game in Amsterdam, took an active part in seeking and rescuing Jews from the lynching by Muslim terrorists. His strategy was to speak loudly in Arabic with a group of Israeli fans, which misled the terrorists into thinking the group he was with were all Arabs and not Jews. As a result, the terrorists left them alone.

This rescue took many hours, and Melhem repeated this strategy several times, as many Jewish Maccabi fans were under attack in restaurants and bars, unable to reach their hotels. Melhem continued to help by using the same trick over and over to protect more Jews.

Melhem, you are a true hero. 🙏

European antisemitism has roots all the way back to the beginnings of the Roman Empire, with Augustus and Tiberius, and accelerating with Vespasian and Titus. Hitler made antisemitism unfashionable for a decade or two, but its comeback came with Israel's victory in the 1967 and 1973 wars. The US as a whole is a few years behind EuroLand, but some parts of the US are at about the same degree (e.g. NYC, Berserkeley, parts of SF and Land of LA).
