U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris once said the authorities could go into gunowners' houses to check that guns are safely stored.

Rating:

True (About this rating?)

Context:

Harris made those remarks in 2007, when she was district attorney in San Francisco and the city was attempting to curb gun deaths. Legislation requiring gun safes and trigger locks passed months later and was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2015.

In the weeks ahead of the 2024 U.S. presidential election, a video circulating online purported to show the Democratic candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris, saying that gun owners should expect visits from the authorities to ensure that they followed safety rules. For example, a Sept. 20, 2024, Instagram post by conservative pundits Tucker Carlson and Jesse Kelly shared the footage:

The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.

Snopes must be bailing on Harris if it admits this!
