The wealthy donors are out of touch because they don't have to live like us.
I once crewed on a boat being sailed up to Marblehead from South Boston. The destination was a WASPy yacht club. The place didn't have the things I've been used to my whole life - vending machines, cigarettes, coffee, and cash bars. To get a drink (of anything), we had to go up to the club's bar that did not accept cash. Members put their bills on a tab. Guests have to pay with credit card; no cash. The bartender would not accept a cash tip until there were no members present. I guess cash tips, or cash anything, were frowned upon. It's for these type of reasons that many wealthy people in the donor class don't walk around with wallets and cash.
They don't know, and do not care, how much things cost because they have "people" to take care of buying stuff and paying bills. The donor-class is oblivious to how most Americans live day-to-day. They can afford to worry about Global Climate Change becuase they don't have to wait for chicken to go on sale so they can afford to buy it at the supermarket.
It's the donors who own both party establishments. That's why the party establishments are unpopular with their voters. That's also why MAGA's looked outside the party establishment to nominate Donald Trump as the Republican candidate in 2016. This is also why they do not undertsand Trump's appeal among the unwashed masses.
Not only is there a culture war, there is also a class war.
