UKRAINE, KHARKIV OBLAST, Nov 27 — Russian troops can’t advance but increase glide bomb and artillery attacks on the Ukrainian army’s positions in Vovchansk and near it on the Kharkiv axis, said Yevhenii Romanov, the spokesman for the “Kharkiv” group of forces, in the state telethon on November 26.

Almost 80% of the buildings of Vovchansk were damaged or destroyed after Russia began its new ground offensive on Kharkiv Oblast in May 2024, revealed the investigation by Bellingcat and AFP, published on October 28.

Ukrainian troops stopped the Russian push into the north of the region in the summer of 2024. Fighting near Lyptsi and in Vovchansk continues today.

Romanov said that, in Vovchansk, the combat is constant, but the Russian army doesn’t have advantages because “they can’t move in large columns [utilizing] the heavy armored machinery or advance in large numbers because Vovchansk’s terrain became very particular after the period of long combat.”   .  .  .

Russia lost more than 2,030 troops in the last 24 hours — the highest death toll for a single day in the ongoing war, Ukraine’s military claimed Friday.

The record daily high of fatalities surpasses the 1,950 Russian deaths recorded on Nov. 12, according to the Ukrainian General Staff of the Armed Forces.

More than 300 weapons and military equipment were also destroyed overnight by Ukrainian forces, the officials said. 

The death toll figure couldn’t be independently verified and Moscow hasn’t publicly commented on the apparent losses.

Ukraine claims more than 738,000 Russian troops have now been killed so far in its nearly two-year war.

Whether north of 700K killed or "just" around 500K, that's a really large % of Russia's economically most productive people. The economic effects of this loss of life - plus God knows how many more maimed and disabled - will affect Russia's economy for several decades.

Most of the people interviewed by 1320, are older and have their "pensions", it's all they care about. A little known fact I found out. Most people older than say, late 50's, are retired and get a government pension. So what do they care if the young get sent to die? As long as it's not their kids I guess, but then again, many are probably cowered into agreeing with the pro-war line.

The share of Russians supporting nuclear strike on Ukraine has risen, with 39% of respondents now considering the use of nuclear weapons against Ukraine acceptable, according to Russian media citing a survey by the Levada Center.

Of those, 11% strongly support a nuclear strike on Ukraine, while 28% believe such an action could "probably be justified."

This represents a new high since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.

"Gradually, these discussions [from the Russian government about about the potential use of nuclear weapons] are leading to an increasing number of people who believe that the use of nuclear weapons is acceptable and, in fact, morally justified," Aleksei Levinson, head of the social and cultural research department at the Levada Center, said at the "Country and World: Russian Realities-2024" conference.

As a result, public fear of nuclear weapons use is diminishing, and the idea of "What's the big deal?" is gaining traction, with nearly 40% of respondents adopting this view, Levinson noted.  .  .  .

On November 29, a position of the S-400 "Triumf" air defense system in temporarily occupied Crimea was targeted, according to GEOINT specialists from CyberBoroshnо.

The location, near a field that was struck, had previously been the site of a stationary S-400 position, which had ceased to be used after frequent missile and drone strikes on Crimea.

However, the site and its surrounding area are situated at a high elevation, indicating that the air defense system may have been relocated there ton November 29 to take advantage of the strategic topography for launching fire, according to CyberBoroshnо.

When the news broke last week that the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden had authorized Ukraine to fire American-made Army Tactical Missile System rockets at targets in around Kursk Oblast in western Russia, the Russian air force braced for the ATACMS, each packing up to 950 submunitions, to rain down.

The storm finally rolled in early Monday morning. “What the bleep? It’s exploding!” a Russian servicemember exclaimed in a video as at least one of the 3,700-pound ATACMS burst over Khalino air base, in Kursk 70 miles from the Russia-Ukraine border. An ATACMS ranges as far as 190 miles.

The raid may have had the effect of “potentially temporarily putting the airfield out of action,” reported Frontelligence Insight, a Ukrainian analysis group. That’s good news for the 20,000-strong Ukrainian force holding a 250-square-mile salient around the town of Sudzha 50 miles southwest of Khalino. That force is expecting a massive Russian assault in the coming days.

Khalino is the closest major airfield to the Kursk battlefield, so it makes sense that the Russian air force has been staging its main ground-attack jets, subsonic Sukhoi Su-25s, at the base. The Russian Su-25 force has been badly bled by Ukrainian air defenses in the 33 months of Russia’s wider war on Ukraine:  .  .  .
