The Kremlin is being urged to increase the price of vodka in Russia to match Ukraine war-driven inflation.

From next year, vodka producers across the country want to see prices increase by 17 per cent to cope with a rise in tax, import costs and logistics expenses, as well as a fall in the value of the rouble.

The increase will only match the impact of inflation that has escalated since the start of the war.

Veniamin Grabar, the president of the Lagoda vodka and spirits producer, told the RBK news agency: “The government is adjusting the market for inflation, as well as changed cost prices and other components that form the price of vodka.”

After the price rise, half a litre of vodka in Russia will cost 349 roubles (£2.37), up from 299 roubles in June.

High Ranking Russian Military Commander Assassinated Near Moscow

A high-ranking Russian officer who had just returned home from the war in Ukraine was shot dead in Moscow in a killing linked to his job, it has been reported.

Nikita Klenkov, 44, who was the deputy head of a military unit and officer of Russia's Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU), was shot at point blank range while he was in a car in the village of Melenki in the Moscow region, an unnamed law enforcement official told RBC.

The Moscow news outlet MK reported that the main line of inquiry is that the murder is associated with his participation in the war in Ukraine.

Klenkov's GRU unit 43292 serves as a training center for Russia's Special Operations Forces (SOF) and he had returned from Ukraine's front line only a week before, according to state media outlet Tass.

Russia's Investigative Committee, which Newsweek has contacted for comment, said the incident took place at about 9 a.m. on Wednesday in which an unknown assailant fired at least three shots into the side window of the driver's door of a car driven by a local resident.

General Staff: Russian army conducts 18 assaults in Kupiansk direction

UKRAINE, KHARKIV OBLAST, Oct 17 — In the Kupiansk direction, there were 18 Russian attacks over the past day. Defense forces repelled Russian military assaults near Kucherivka, Pishchane, Stepova Novoselivka, Lozova, and Vyshneve, reported the General Staff.

One of the main goals of the Russian full-scale war is to capture the remainder of occupied Luhansk and Donetsk Oblast; their operations on the Kupiansk-Svatove-Kreminna line are dedicated to that. From this section of the frontline, they also aim to push into Kharkiv Oblast and re-occupy Kupiansk and Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi, important logistics hubs for the region. 

In the Kharkiv direction, there were four combat clashes near Starytsia.

Australia To Send M1 Abrams Tanks To Ukraine

With the majority of Ukraine’s U.S.-supplied M1A1 Abrams having been lost in combat, the announcement is very welcome news for Kyiv.

The announcement comes amid lingering questions about the effectiveness of the Abrams tanks that have already been supplied to Ukraine, including reports from this summer suggesting they had been briefly withdrawn from combat operations. We can’t confirm they actually were withdrawn, and surviving examples have meanwhile been upgraded, reflecting their continued relevance.

Pat Conroy, Australia’s Minister for Defense Industry and Capability Delivery, told the press today that the surplus M1A1s would be transferred to Ukraine, ending a long period of speculation about their fate. The tanks have an estimated value of $164 million and bring total Australian military assistance to Ukraine to more than $1.3 billion.

A formal announcement about the transfer will be made tomorrow, at the meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels.  .  .  .

Ukraine may use the F-16 fighter jets provided by the Netherlands within Russian airspace, said Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans during a NATO Defense Ministers' meeting in Brussels on October 17.

“We delivered our first batch of F-16s, which are now in Ukrainian airspace. We have always said that Ukraine must adhere to international law,” Brekelmans told reporters.

“International law does not stop at the border or 100 kilometers from it. Therefore, we permit Ukraine to use F-16s for self-defense,” Brekelmans explained, suggesting the aircraft could be used to intercept missiles or strike military targets, including Russian airbases.

Brekelmans stated that Ukraine’s use of F-16s for military operations within Russia or its airspace complies with international law.

He also added that supporting Ukraine is a top priority for the Netherlands, citing his recent visit to Kharkiv and Kyiv, where he witnessed the challenging conditions at the front lines and in major cities.

Modern Russian Weapons Discovered in Hezbollah Tunnels

Recent investigations have uncovered a significant cache of Russian weaponry in tunnels used by the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, as reported by various sources including the research center Alma and BILD.

According to the findings, a substantial portion of the seized arms consists of Russian-manufactured equipment. Specifically, among the captured items are 9M133 Kornet anti-tank missiles and Igla-S surface-to-air missile systems, which were produced between 2015 and 2021. Additionally, components of rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) were found with production dates from 2018 to 2021.

Iranian-made Tharallah launch systems, designed to fire Kornet missiles, were also located, alongside Spanish 106 mm artillery shells and American-made Mk-19 grenade launchers and M-40 recoilless rifles.

IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari shared details during a recent visit to the tunnels, which lie eight meters underground.

Footage released by the IDF shows the state of the weapons stored within, many of which appear to be relatively new and sourced from various international countries.  .  .

N Korea sends troops to fight with Russia: Seoul

North Korea has started sending troops to fight with Russia in Ukraine, South Korea's spy agency has said as Seoul warned of a "grave security threat".

The allegation comes a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he believed 10,000 North Korean soldiers could join the war, based on intelligence information.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol called for a security meeting on Friday and said the international community must respond with "all available means".

According to the spy agency, 1,500 troops have already arrived in Russia - with anonymous sources telling South Korean media the final figure could be closer to 12,000.

This comes as evidence mounts that North Korea is supplying Russia with ammunition, as recently demonstrated by the recovery of a missile in Ukraine’s Poltava region.

Moscow and Pyongyang have also been deepening their cooperation in recent months. Last week, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un greeted Russian President Vladimir Putin on his birthday, calling him his "closest comrade".

Friday's security meeting was attended by key officials from South Korea's National Security Office, the Ministry of National Defence, and the National Intelligence Service, Yoon's office said.

"[The participants] decided not to ignore the situation and to jointly respond to it with the international community using all available means," it said.

The allegation from the National Intelligence Service (NIS) comes days after Ukrainian military intelligence sources said that Russia's army is forming a unit of North Koreans................

I guess when a country runs out of soldiers they buy a mercenary army. But where are they getting the money?

If Kim Jong Youngun is doing this I can't believe it's out of the goodness of his heart. There is payback of some kind.
