What are the rules of the presidential debate?

The parameters will essentially be the same as the June debate between Trump and Biden, The Associated Press reported, citing a copy of the rules provided to the outlet by a senior Trump campaign official on condition of anonymity.

According to ABC News, the candidates will stand behind lecterns and neither will make opening statements.

The event won’t have an audience, written notes or live microphones when the candidates aren’t speaking, according to the AP.

Microphone muting has so far been a point of contention leading up to the debate. In June, CNN enforced a no-interruptions rule, meaning the microphone of one candidate was muted while the other spoke.

Who is moderating?

“ABC News Live Prime” anchor Linsey Davis and “World News Tonight” anchor David Muir are moderators for the event.

Trump won a virtual coin flip. He chose to deliver the last closing statement of the debate, and Harris chose the right podium position, ABC’s announcement said.

Harris wants to challenge Trump on policy at debate
by Alex Gangitano - 09/08/24 6:00 AM ET

PITTSBURGH — Vice President Harris wants to challenge former President Trump on policy on the debate stage Tuesday, hoping to make a compelling argument that she’s stronger than the former president on issues that Americans care about while responding to criticism about her own proposals.

“She’s not just going to read off statistics, she’s going to read off what her policy is and how it actually will impact peoples’ lives,” a former Harris aide said.

Trump’s comments about child care costs during a New York speech Thursday added fuel to this part of Harris’s strategy.

The former president was asked at the Economic Club of New York if he would commit to prioritizing legislation to make child care affordable. He gave a lengthy answer in response without articulating any specific legislation he would propose, instead suggesting tariffs on foreign nations would help cover costs.

I think she'll show up, but ABC will not follow the agreed to rules. I think they'll cut Trump's mic and she'll have prepped for their questions and of course those questions are going to be so skewed that she's going to painted as the greatest woman of color ever to run for president.

Sorry, I don't think Trump is going to win this one. No way.
