Celebrity chef blasts $50 minimum wage proposal
© Fox Business / YouTube

Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., championed a proposal to raise the federal minimum wage to $50 per hour as part of her bid for the U.S. Senate earlier this year. Lee was no longer in the running as of March 5, but given the substantial gap between this figure and the current federal minimum wage of $7.25, her proposal drew considerable attention.

Among the critics was celebrity chef and restaurant owner Andrew Gruel, who expressed grave concerns about the proposal in an interview on Fox Business.

“This would completely decimate every single business in the state of California,” he said, speculating that only a small fraction of high-end retail businesses might withstand a $50 an hour minimum wage.

Gruel contended that California hosts thousands of state jobs and challenged the state to immediately raise those workers’ wages to $50 an hour.

Higher wages are a threat to the whole service industry business model.  This was the folly of allowing well paying manufacturing and technology jobs to be offshored.

Those jobs were replaced with businesses that had low-wage, low or variable profit margin business models.  (Would you like fries with your China-made iPhone or your Uber "side" gig?)  When these $h!t jobs are no loner available, where do those displaced workers go when the service sector can no longer afford to employ them?

"Allowing"? As in state or Federal gooberments forcing manufacturing operations to stay within the US? Had this been done Apple and HP and Cisco and Dell and ... would have moved their entire companies from California and Texas to the State of Bankruptcy, Chapter 7 County.

All the college boys that run the Government and Big Corporations were indifferent to the loss of blue collar jobs.  They saw it as a societal and economic evolution that we become an Information and Services based economy.  Our enlightened minds could be put to work on more high-value activities than agriculture and manufacturing.

The Globalists saw the hollowing out of America's Middle as a good thing - more profits for their grubby Kleptocratic mitts.  They made no effort to make America more competitive in a Global free, competitive marketplace.  Keeping America competitive would have been too much drudgery for the lazy Harvard Business School MBA and PhD Kleptocrats.

They were willfully blind when they allowed Communist China to join the W.T.O  The increased profit margins on iPhones and Nike sneakers were too good to resist.

Finance is about monetization.  The Globalist Kleptocrats monetized the hollowing out of the American enconomy at the hands of Communist China for their own personal benefit.

Globalists and Internationalists are the greatest threat to American Exceptionalism.  They are economic and social locusts who consume all they can before moving on to their next victim nation.  Their greed and pomposity play right into the hands of the Communist China.

China will succeed where the Soviet Union failed.  The Soviet Union bankrupted itself by attempting to militarily compete with the United States.  Communist China will eventually defeat America militarily by using our own greed to give away our economic and technological competitive advantages to their military.

The Cold War never ended.  The Chinese Communist Party filled the vacuum caused by the collapse of the Soviet Union.  Maoism has superseded Stalinism as the pre-eminent Communist doctrine.

Go ahead.  Dismiss me as a crackpot, but ask yourselves, "Who benefitted the most from Globalism and who stands to benefit the most from Global Climate Change?"

It was no accident that Globalism and Global Climate Change gained prominence, together, at the same time - the beginning of the Clinton Presidency.

This garbage is never going to end.

In fact, we have to get rid of “Minimum Wage”.

Period.

It is a PRICE CONTROL - fascist.

Inflation will largely go away with it, as will the ILLEGAL ALIEN PROBLEM since (small) business will no longer feel the need to do stuff under the table.  Jobs for illegals will dry up.

A legitimate minimum wage is economically useful because it sets a floor and reduces marginal tit-for-tat bargaining that is not, at the margin, economically useful.

Who gets to define "legitimate"?  Some government bureaucrat making six figures who sets one-size-fits-all rules for an entire nation?  I agree with @the OlLine Rebel here.  Price controls are wrong.

A minimum wage simply sets a barrier to the job market entry. You have to be able to produce more than you're being paid or you won't have a job. Young people starting out with no skills have to start somewhere. No job delays that start which causes numerous negative issues over time. And as the expense barrier increases there are strong incentives for the employers to come up with other ways to get the job done using fewer people and/or people that already have some basic skills.

So we import illegals, most of which know how to work, to do what jobs remain.

Government interference in the market distorts the market only increasing costs while lowering efficiency. The more that is piled on the more bogged down everything becomes. And the poorer as a nation we become.

Only if it's set too high.  $15/hour is too high; $7.50/hour is not.

Says who?  Who gets to decide?  You?

Wages should be a set transaction between employer and employee only based solely upon the unique conditions of that particular market.  One-size-fits-all does not work everywhere.

For the umpteenth time, minimum wage should NEVER be construed to be a living wage.  It is an entry level wage only.  As @DB has already pointed out.  Besides, setting the same minimum wage for New York, Hawaii, Alaska, and Mississippi is beyond asinine.

Of course.  It should be a floor, not a median or mean.

So the person who doesn't have the ability to produce $7.50 an hour of work is simply out of a job period. In a free society people should be free to offer this for that and other people should be able to freely accept or reject it. Interfering in the market always ends up with more interference to fix what was interfered with - just like socialism... And we end up where we are now. Once you bite on the apple of government control of the market you only end up deeper and deeper of government control of everything.

What the bureaucrat is saying is that the person incapable of producing $7.50/hr of work should still be paid $7.50/hr, and the big bad business owner should make up the difference out of pocket.  They should not complain about paying $7.50 for $6, $5, or even $4 of work because they are rich.

Yeah, because the labor riots and red scares of the late 1800s and early 1900s were such a more economically successful period of time.

So labor riots and red scares ended in 1933?  And to equate 'minimum wage' with "economically successful period of time" is ludicrous.

OK, get rid of the minimum wage or at least drop it down to $2 an hour.

See how long things go before you get a REAL socialist revolution in the streets...

Evidently those millions of illegals will have to find other ways to get money, because most people aren’t going to hire them at $20/hr, of whatever floor is set by our politicians.
