Iran is reportedly getting a terrifying arsenal from Russia, including anti-aircraft launchers and fighter jets — and is threatening to fire weapons it has never before used in “a severe, extensive and painful response” to the “slightest action” by Israel.

Abolfazl Amouei, a spokesperson for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security Committee, told a local news station Monday that the Islamic Republic “will confront any Israeli aggression and respond to it.”

“We are ready to use weapons that we have not used before,” the official told Al-Mayadeen News, according to the Economic Times.

“We have plans for all scenarios, and we call on the Zionists to act rationally.”

Separately, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi warned Israel that if it takes even the “slightest action,” it will face “a severe, extensive and painful response.”

“The blind support of some Western countries to the Zionist regime is the cause of tension in the region,” he claimed, according to the Daily Express.

Ummmmm, the Iranian air force is equipped with F-5Es, F-4Es, F-14As, Chinese MiG-21 clones, plus a few each MiG-29s and Su-22s. Changing from older fighter and multi-role aircraft to more modern Russian aircraft will be a massive retraining effort, ultimately involving something like 3/4 of its pilots plus changing over to the Russian ground-controlled tactical model. I wouldn't write off and ignore even the MiG-21 clones, but whatever pilots Israel might throw at Iran (if they do) will be fully trained in their planes, their squadron tactics, and their general strategic/tactical models applicable to their missions.

The tl;dr version is that this would be a mismatch for 1-3 years at the least.

As to "anti-aircraft launchers", aside from shoulder-fired MANPADS type weapons (which are short range), Russian air defense systems in Ukraine have shown themselves to be very vulnerable to penetration everything from Soviet-era planes to Ukrainian home-brew cruise missiles and drones to slightly down-rev NATO artillery and missiles (how many missile batteries would a slow-flying Ukrainian drone have evaded to reach a target 500-1000 miles into Russia?!).

tl;dr version, between the retraining and multiple vulnerabilities to older weapons systems, what Israel would deploy would be evn more effective, for years to come.
