Haiti: US guns pour into Port-au-Prince, fuelling surge in violence

...........For a country that does not manufacture weapons, a UN report in January found every type of gun was flooding Port-au-Prince: high-powered rifles such as AK-47s, 9mm pistols, sniper rifles and machine guns.

The weapons are fuelling the staggering surge in Haiti's gang-related violence.

There is no exact number for how many trafficked firearms are currently in Haiti.

The UN report said some estimates put it at half a million legal and illegal weapons here as of 2020.

It reported that guns and ammunition were being smuggled in from land, air and sea from US states such as Florida, Texas and Georgia.

There have been seizures in the country's main ports in Port-au-Prince, Port-de-Paix and in Cap-Haitien. Illegal weapons are hidden in shipping containers among toy and clothes donations.

In July 2022, Haitian authorities seized a huge haul of dozens of weapons with 15,000 rounds of ammunition. They were stuffed in a shipment from Florida heading to an Episcopal church in Haiti.

The UN also identified the use of several clandestine airstrips built for humanitarian purposes after the devastating earthquake in 2010, which are now hardly monitored.

Earlier this month, a UN spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, told journalists the UN Secretary-General's message to gangs in Haiti was to "silence the guns"........................

AK-47 is of intermediate power, about like a .30-30, AK-74, similar to .223.

9mm pistols are common as cat crap. They're used worldwide.

Sniper Rifles.  While they may be getting some of those $5,000 and up actual sniper rifles, that's pretty spendy when they could just be buying some cheap surplus bolt actions somewhere.

"machine guns". Don't look for American gun owners to pony up a bunch of these, especially anything made since 1986, because they are illegal for the average person.
Older full auto firearms, made before 1986 can be bought with the permits, taxes and deep pockets, but are heavily regulated and not likely at all to be sold off to Haitians, or anyone else, for that mattter.

But Joe Biden imported so many people from so many places, it's entirely possible he brought in some Haitians with criminal connections or links to arms dealers who can pick those things up on the down-low..

To say things have been a mess there for a while would tend toward understatement, but I foresee a return to a warlord style dictator, and that wasn't pleasant for most.

Seems like being armed might not be a bad idea for Christians in Haiti. But with a population of over 11 million before the illegals bailed, "dozens" of weapons isn't much. It won't stop people from hacking each other to death, or even having someone over for dinner.

The Hutus and Tutsis managed half a million dead, mostly with machetes.

Has there ever been a time in recent history when Haiti WASN'T "a mess"? It was a bleephole when I was in the Dominican Republic in 66,or so. Mule and horse-drawn carts were the normal means of transportation,along with  those little Vespa 2 stroke 3 wheel whateverthehellthey  are.

And that was all considered to be normal.

Then again,so was VooDoo,which SEEMED to be the the national religion.

Well Papa Doc came into power in '57, so for all practical purposes, Haiti has been a hot mess for my lifetime. I was still in diapers when he started in. For its proximity to the first world, Haiti seems to be determined to be a third world craphole.
