New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez trial date set for May in bribery case
By Kyle Schnitzer

New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez’s trial on charges he pocketed bribes – including cash and $150,000 in gold bars – will begin on May 6, a federal judge ruled Monday.

Judge Sidney Stein, during a hearing in Manhattan federal court, urged prosecutors to get the ball rolling on the high-profile corruption case, which accuses Menendez and his wife of trading favors to help three New Jersey businessmen and the government of Egypt.

Prosecutor Paul Monteleoni said the pretrial “discovery” process has been delayed because some of it involved classified information, and said the evidence – described as “quite voluminous” – could take several more weeks to get through.

Stein said that the defense will have to submit all of its evidence by Dec. 4.

“I’m certainly going to try to hold to the dates,” the judge said.

Menendez, 69, was not in court after his lawyer argued that he had to be in Washington DC for his Senatorial duties.

His wife, Nadine Menendez, 56, was present at the hearing – with the same Gucci bag that she toted to court last week when she was arraigned.

UPDATE

Judge Rejects Sen. Menendez's Request to Delay Bribery Trial
Friday, 29 December 2023 02:23 PM EST

The New York federal judge scheduled to preside over the bribery trial of Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., rejected on Thursday a defense request to delay the start of jury selection from May to July.

Judge Sidney H. Stein's order leaves in place a May 5 trial date in Manhattan for the Democrat, who faces trial along with his wife and three New Jersey businessmen.  ...

Lawyers for Menendez claimed earlier this month that they need extra time to prepare for trial, in part because they've been given over 6.7 million documents that they must sift through and because the complexity of the case requires resolving questions of law that may take extra time to decide.

Prosecutors opposed the request on the grounds that they had warned defense lawyers when the trial date was set in the fall that the evidence they would turn over would be voluminous and that nothing has changed since then. ... Newsmax

Sen. Bob Menendez Accused of Accepting Bribes from Qatari Royal Family

Embattled Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) has been slapped with additional allegations of accepting bribes from the Qatari royal family.

“The new allegations accuse Menendez, who has pleaded not guilty to all prior counts, of making positive comments about Qatar in exchange for items of value, including luxury wristwatches,” reported ABC NY.

The wristwatches allegedly offered to Menendez were valued between $10,000 and $24,000, according to the new indictment. Fred Daibes, the co-defendant, was quoted in the indictment as saying, “how about one of these?” to Menendez in a message alongside photos of the watches. The two men allegedly attended an event in New York hosted by the Qatari government. Per ABC NY:

This guy is so corrupt, they probably could have bribed him with a pack of gum and a yo-yo.

Why hasn't he been booted from Congress?

Wingnut throws the wrench with:
"Why hasn't he been booted from Congress?"

Are you kidding?
He probably will refuse to resign even if convicted.
And they STILL won't expel him.

Will Lindsey Graham be a character witness for Menendez at this trial, too?

Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., and his wife faced new obstruction allegations and charges Tuesday in a superseding indictment filed by federal prosecutors in Manhattan.

The new accusations appear to result from last week's guilty plea of co-defendant Jose Uribe, who admitted to providing Nadine Menendez with a Mercedes-Benz convertible in exchange for the senator's help.

When Menendez and his wife learned of the federal investigation in 2022, prosecutors said they sought to cover up the bribe payments.

According to the superseding indictment, the senator instructed his then-lawyer to tell investigators he had been unaware of the payments Uribe made toward the Mercedes and, when he did learn about them, that he thought they were loans. He told his lawyer to tell investigators the same thing about a mortgage payment made by another co-defendant. ...
