Quote
US Attorney General Merrick Garland delivered remarks on ‘Bloody Sunday’ at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Selma, Alabama.

Garland told the black churchgoers that voter ID requirements are “discriminatory” and that he’s fighting to stop oppressive laws.

“The right to vote is the cornerstone of our democracy, the right from which all others flow. It is a right that members of this community bled for,” Garland said to the churchgoers.

Garland insisted the “right to vote is still under attack.”

“And that is why the Justice Department is fighting back,” he said. “That is why, one of the first things I did as Attorney General was to double the number of lawyers in the Voting Section of the Civil Rights Division. ”

Garland said voter ID requirements and restrictions of ballot ‘drop boxes’ are “discriminatory, burdensome and unnecessary.”

“That is why we are challenging efforts by states and jurisdictions to implement discriminatory, burdensome, and unnecessary restrictions on access to the ballot, including those related to mail-in voting, the use of drop boxes, and voter ID requirements,” Garland said.

“That is why we are working to block the adoption of discriminatory redistricting plans that dilute the vote of Black voters and other voters of color,” he said.

AG Garland warns Selma church that voting rights are under attack on 59th anniversary of ‘Bloody Sunday’
By Associated Press
Published March 3, 2024, 2:25 p.m. ET

SELMA, Ala. — Attorney General Merrick Garland told parishioners at a Selma church service commemorating the 59th anniversary of the attack by Alabama law officers on Civil Rights demonstrators that voting rights are endangered in much of the nation.

Garland told a Bloody Sunday service that decisions by the Supreme Court and lower courts since 2006 have weakened the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which was passed in the wake of the police attack.

The demonstrators were beaten by officers on the Edmund Pettus Bridge on March 7, 1965, as they tried to march across Alabama in support of voting rights.

Who would have thought that the white liberals are actually the racists....lol.

White liberals truly believe that black people are inferior and unable to succeed on their own merit.

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.

Yeah, well, the only way white liberals can feel superior to all 'those' people they 'help' is by assuming 'those' people are of lesser intelligence. So, who are the racists?

Unless they are illegal they do need ID to get public assistance. Poor blacks and whites are so screwed.

Ethnic minority people are incapable of getting IDs but "whites" can?

Returning to voting at precinct locations makes voting difficult for ethnic minority people but easy for "whites"?
If, as anti-Covid-vaxxers claim, https://www.poynter.org/fact-checking/2021/robert-f-kennedy-jr-said-the-covid-19-vaccine-is-the-deadliest-vaccine-ever-made-thats-not-true/ , https://gospelnewsnetwork.org/2021/11/23/covid-shots-are-the-deadliest-vaccines-in-medical-history/ , The Vaccine is deadly, where in the US have Pfizer and Moderna hidden the millions of bodies of those who died of "vaccine injury"? Is reality a Big Pharma Shill?

Millions now living should have died. Anti-Covid-Vaxxer ghouls hardest hit.

Illlegal aliens can get drivers license in many states, including Massachusetts.

What's the problem with American citizens getting Government ID?

Where's the complaining from the left about this church promoting politics, and the demands that its tax-exempt status be revoked?

Yeah, I didn't think so.

Yes, Unless they join together and push back; I've been saying this for quite some time. Not just poor Blacks, but ALL Blacks and Whites need to come together and join forces; otherwise, yes, we are very screwed.

:pondering: How do Black people get food stamps, section 9 housing social security, medicare or state provided medical assistance, their schedule II drugs, alcohol, etc.? It's just AMAZING that Black people are able to acquire the requisite ID's for all of this but suddenly become incompetent children when it comes to ID's for voting.

Merrick Garland slams voter ID laws as ‘discriminatory’ and ‘unnecessary’
By
Peyton Sorosinski
March 4, 2024 2:10 pm

Attorney General Merrick Garland pledged to challenge what he called voting restrictions implemented by Republican lawmakers that he said were “discriminatory, burdensome, and unnecessary.”

Garland spoke alongside Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday in Selma, Alabama, at the city’s 59th anniversary of the 1965 civil rights event dubbed “Bloody Sunday,” the day when Alabama police officers beat up voting rights demonstrators protesting in 1965. There, Garland brought up the history of black voting rights, claiming that the “right to vote is still under attack.”

“There are many things that are open to debate in America,” Garland said Sunday in front of the Tabernacle Baptist Church. “One thing that must not be open for debate is the right of all eligible citizens to vote and to have their vote counted.”

Garland has said that Supreme Court decisions have weakened the 1965 Voting Rights Act. He added that some voter ID laws and redistricting maps have put minority groups at a disadvantage, saying that voting restrictions “threaten the foundation of our system of government.”

“That is why the Justice Department is fighting back,” Garland said Sunday in front of the church. “That is why one of the first things I did when I came into office was to double the size of the voting section of the civil rights division. That is why we are challenging efforts by states and jurisdictions to implement discriminatory, burdensome, and unnecessary restrictions on access to the ballot, including those related to mail-in voting, the use of drop boxes, and voter ID requirements.”

Merrick Garland is the very epitome of evil. It's hard to believe that someone can be that deranged and hold such a powerful position.

Just remember:  it is thanks to Mitch McConnell that the phrase "Supreme Court Justice Merrick Garland" belong to an alternate reality, not the real world.  I hope the next GOP leader in the Senate is as skillful as McConnell was.
And when they behead your own people in the wars which are to come, then you will know what this was all about.

This had nothing to do with McConnell and everything to do with Democrat overconfidence that Hillary would win in 2016.  The Dems named Garland as a holder, but were going to leave the pick to Hillary.

Had Obama pressed the issue, McConnell would have folded.
