Republican Steve Garvey is polling ahead of the Democrats in the running for California’s Senate seat, now in a “statistical tie” with front-runner Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA).
With the Super Tuesday primaries next week, the University of California, Berkeley, Institute of Governmental Studies released a final poll showing Garvey with support from 27% of likely voters, followed by Schiff at 25%. Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA), who has been competing with Garvey for second place in recent weeks, fell to third in the new poll unveiled Friday. Porter earned 19%, and Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) trailed the three contenders with 8%.
In a head-to-head contest, Schiff would initially hold a substantial lead over Garvey, coming in with 53% of support compared to Garvey’s 38%. But in a runoff between Schiff and Porter, the two would start out tied.
Porter has accused Schiff, the biggest spender in the race, of spending millions on ads featuring Garvey in an attempt to sideline her from the competition. While Schiff is positioned to beat Garvey if the two make it to the general ballot, the Democrats’ big spending could be boosting Garvey’s candidacy more than anticipated.
