Beginning Monday, Pittsburgh police won’t respond to any calls that aren’t in progress emergencies.

Chief Larry Scirotto wants to cut their call volume from approximately 200,000 calls per year down to about 50,000.

That essentially means that calls for criminal mischief, theft, harassment and burglary alarms, just to name a few, will all be handled by the telephone reporting unit or online reporting.

Scirotto is working on a plan where the Pittsburgh Parking Authority would handle all parking complaints. He said that’s the number one complaint the department receives.

Scirotto says this will free up officers for more important things.

“That allows our officers to be engaged in community in a way, now they’re at the YMCA instead of sitting on the 10th Street bypass with a bike complaint,” said Scirotto.

Between the hours of 3 a.m. and 7 a.m., there won’t be a desk officer at any of the six zone stations.

They’ve installed call boxes linked to 911 for emergency.

“There is not any data to supports us having our zones manned by personnel from 3 a.m. to 7 a.m. For the very one off instance I can’t make an exception,” said Scirotto.

On some overnight shifts, they’ll only be 22 officers to cover the entire city.

The crime statistics in Pittsburgh must be really, really good!

If you don't record them, they don't exist.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

NYC does the same thing.  If you don't record it, it doesn't exist.

Pittsburgh police won't send officers to certain emergency calls, will redirect to telephone unit
Police officers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, will no longer respond to lower-priority calls that the bureau says do not require an in-person response, and will instead redirect them to its Telephone Reporting Unit.

Officers will still respond to "in-progress emergencies," where a person may need medical aid, domestic disputes, calls with evidence or where the Mobile Crime Unit will be requested to process a scene, the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police said in a statement announcing the changes.

The Telephone Reporting Unit will field calls for theft, harassment, criminal mischief and burglary alarms, WPXI-TV reported.

Pittsburgh is now facing crippling police shortage. The department is no longer responding to 911 calls for robberies, harassment, or theft.
A suburb of Pittsburgh, Verona, now has **𝗭𝗘𝗥𝗢** police officers on duty at night.

Have they figured out yet who's to blame for this?

Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey was busy shepherding Joe Biden around a Sheetz gas station the other day. Too busy to worry about policing in his city. Verona is down the river a bit but still in the same county, a working class community. Not sure what its problem is.

This just in from Verona, Pa.: Shortage of local police, 2 violent crimes have Verona residents on edge.

... The crimes — an assault near popular Cribbs Field and an armed robbery on the 700 block of Maple Street — have residents nervous and borough officials trying to hire more police.

Instead of borough police, state police responded to the assault from their Coraopolis police station nearly 30 miles away, Verona Borough Manager Stefanie Woolford said.

Hours later, the armed robbery occurred. Home doorbell video footage shows several people robbing a home on Maple Street, then driving away.

Local officers weren’t informed until the next day, according to Allegheny County Police, who’ve since taken over the investigation. ...

Sounds like it's time for the formation of a "citizen's police" to handle these matters on their own...

I applaud the spirit of the post, just who in their right mind would volunteer in an area where judges are liberal and would throw you under the jail for what was considered just punishment years ago. Town is 96% white... wonder the makeup of the criminals (judging by the FB page by the dept, the usual).

Like the Chicago mayor did, I’m sure Pittsburgh’s problems will be blamed by right wingers
I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.
