Biden calls current GOP ‘worse’ than the ‘real racists’ he served with in the Senate in the ’70s

President Joe Biden heartily attacked Republican lawmakers Wednesday night during a private campaign fundraiser in San Francisco, California.
Biden has been battling with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), other House Republicans, and, from a distance, former President Donald Trump over efforts to reform immigration policy and extend aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. During the fundraiser, the president claimed that this group was harder to deal with than the “real racists” he served with in the Senate in the 1970s.
“I’ve been a senator since ’72. I’ve served with real racists. I’ve served with Strom Thurmond. I’ve served with all these guys that have set terrible records on race,” Biden told a group of donors, per traveling press. “But guess what? These guys are worse. These guys do not believe in basic democratic principles.”
The president proceeded to recall how he’d been asked in 2003 to deliver the eulogy for former Sen. Strom Thurmond, a lifelong opponent of the civil rights movement who Biden claimed was easier to work with than the current House caucus.
“I told the truth. By the time Strom left, he did terrible things. But by the time he left, he had more African Americans in his staff than any other member in Congress. He voted to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act,” he claimed. “I’m not making him more than he was, but my point is at least you could work with some of these guys.”
