Former President Donald Trump is working behind the scenes to help select Republican Senate candidates.

Many Republicans blame the GOP's disappointing 2022 election showing on its candidates, who they saw as too far-right. The National Republican Senatorial Committee's new chairman, Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT), is treading carefully, vowing to change strategy from 2022 but also keeping Trump close, Axios reported.

Daines is aiming to grab candidates approved by Trump but who are still acceptable to centrist Republican voters and independents. He generally avoids selecting candidates who are more "extreme," with the exception of Kari Lake, who looks poised to be the Republican candidate in Arizona.

Another theme of candidates favored by the NRSC are veterans — the favored candidates in Montana and Nevada boast distinguished military experience.

Trump appears to be fine with the strategy of separating the candidates from himself. He has largely kept his distance publicly from Senate candidates. He has only endorsed three so far.

However, the strategy isn't going over well with everyone in Trump's orbit. Steve Bannon derided Daines as a "gutless coward" and said all the selected candidates would need to be "weighed and measured" for loyalty to Trump.

That's the kind of thing I don't believe without verifying for myself first, so I followed the sources and...nope, that's not what he said.  The actual source cited by the Washington Examiner is Axios, and the Axios article attributes that statement to a Bannon War Room video.

The part where he uses the "weighed and measured" phrase is right about at the 5:00 mark, and he just doesn't say what he is reported to have said.  I don't like Bannon, and liked him a whole lot less after listening to that video.  But he just didn't make that particular statement.

Oh, it makes sense.  Chip Roy has a CPAC rating of 97.32%.  Trump is more ideologically aligned with Chuck Schumer.  His notion of a republican is whoever wore that label in NYC.

Just another reason NOT to vote Trump. Time and time again he proves NOT to be a conservative by going against those who are conservative and promote conservatism.  That's the last thing this country needs.

IF Trump truly cared about this country and what's left of the conservative movement he would be applauding and helping conservatives.  He is doing the absolute opposite.

Trump's chosen Senate and House candidates will be a boon for the Dems.

Trump values blind loyalty above all else.  His picks will be lapdogs with full-frontal lobotomies.  The candidates don't need to think for themselves; Trump will do their thinking for them.
