Senate passes $883.7 billion defense policy bill that includes record 5.2% pay raise and excludes highly partisan social provisions

NDAA PASSES SENATE 87-13: With an overwhelming bipartisan vote, the Senate has passed and sent to the House the annual National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal 2024, which began Oct. 1. The bill supports $883.7 billion in defense spending, including $841.4 billion for the Pentagon, a roughly 3% increase over last year.

Senators praised the passage as a sign that Democrats and Republicans are capable of working together and finding compromise when U.S. national security is at stake, and they were anxious to tout the 5.2% pay raise for both the military and civilian DOD employees.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) pronounced the bill as “precisely the kind of bipartisan cooperation the American people want from Congress.”

“While no bill is perfect, the passage of the defense authorization bill makes us a stronger nation and provides certainty and predictability to our armed forces at a time of growing threats,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said.

“This NDAA takes care of our servicemembers and their families, providing the largest pay raise in decades and improving housing, education, and childcare access,” Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said in a statement.

Breaking News: The House is voting on the Defense bill $886 Billion that includes travel for abortions and transgender surgeries paid for by taxpayers. Both were removed by the House but Chuck Schumer negotiated with @SpeakerJohnson
to have put back into the bill.

It also has hidden in it an extension for FISA.  The FBI abused FISA this year by investigating innocent Americans at the rate of 200,000 times illegally.

The Senate passed the Defense bill last night and I expect our traitorous House of Reps to pass it today because they leave for another extended vacation tomorrow.

House passes massive $886 BILLION defense bill despite Republican turmoil over inclusion of short-term extension of FBI spy tool: Lawmakers flee D.C. for holidays as Senate is still negotiating border security and Ukraine and Israel aid

The bill had wide opposition from right-wing Republicans who thought it did not have enough conservative provisions
House Freedom Caucus members clashed with Speaker Johnson over the four-month extension of the FBI's controversial spy tool under FISA
The NDAA strengthens the United States' trilateral alliance with the U.K. and Australia, provides troops a pay raise and authorizes additional Ukraine funds

Wasn't it over $2T that was reported to be missing on 9/10/2001 in appropriated Defense Dept Budgets the day before the Airliner slammed into the Defense Accounting Wing of the Pentagon.

What did the GOP gain in any of this? Nothing as usual!  Oh, other than a  5.2% flippin' pay raise.

" ......Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., also lauded the bill’s authorization of the military pay raise plus its requirements for new oversight mechanisms for Ukraine security assistance. And McConnell touted the bill’s authorization of spending on the U.S. defense industrial base’s production capacity, on Israeli missile defenses and on weapons needed in the Indo-Pacific region.

What exactly does that mean????

So 702 is a part of this which I posted in another thread, that deals with FBI surveillance.

“They’ve known for five years [Section 702] was going to expire at the end of this year and yet they just want to punt it with the hope that they’ll never have to debate it,” Paul said on the Senate floor. “Extending this section 702 robs Congress of the ability to make reforms now and likely robs Congress of the opportunity to make reforms anytime in the next year.”

Anyone notice that the defense budget is now less than interest on the national debt?

I have no problem giving service members a raise, but how do we pay for it?
