Dictatorship? No, we are a Republic with no room for a dictator.  We have a Constitution that needs to be honored and adhered to. Trump has become unhinged and obviously does not believe in our rule of law. He claims that he said that he only wants to be dictator for a day.  Really?  I find that difficult to believe. His past record indicates that what he says and does are two different things.

Trump defends dictator comments amid NYC soiree filled with MAGA diehards

 — The chairman of an Austrian political party founded by ex-Nazis, the conservative Twitter star behind the anti-trans Bud Light backlash and former President Donald Trump all walked into a bar.

Seriously.

On Saturday night in Manhattan, amid butler-delivered bellinis, sequined ball gowns and a five-course French service meal, characters from all corners of the Republican Party’s MAGA faction gathered for “a night of dinner, drinking, and love of country.”

Trump, the New York Young Republican Club's 111th Annual Gala Keynote speaker, delivered.

“We want to liberate America because we’re in a country that's in a lot of pain right now, a lot of hurt,” Trump told the crowd, during his 80-minute long speech. “This campaign is on a righteous crusade to rescue our nation from a very corrupt political class.”

On the heels of a reaffirmed gag order, a debate of largely deferential Republican opponents and near slam-dunk poll numbers for the Iowa caucuses just weeks away, Trump made his pledge for a return to the White House.

The former president also addressed his comments earlier this week where he said he would not be a dictator “except for day one” if he returns to office in 2025.

“[Peter] Baker today in the New York Times said that I want to be a dictator,” Trump said, referencing an article from the newspaper’s chief White House correspondent.

“I didn’t say that. I said I want to be a dictator for one day. You know why I wanted to be a dictator? Because I want a wall, and I want to drill, drill, drill,” Trump said, adding that Democrats’ “newest hoax” is to label him a threat to democracy.

The former president was preaching to his base Saturday, as a mix of firebrand conservative media icons, siloed far-right lawmakers and wealthy MAGA-loving donors chanted his name and cheered pro-Trump speeches from carefully-plated banquet tables..............

Closing the border in one day ??? So, that would mean building a wall and securing the border in one day?? Keep in mind he had 4 years and didn't do that. Drilling??  So he'll drill for one day and then stop???  Doubtful.

Don't get me wrong I'm all for securing the border and drilling but his comment is over the top -- a dictator for one day.  Nope.  Not buying that.

Trump’s vow to only be a dictator on ‘day one’ follows growing worry over his authoritarian rhetoric

As Donald Trump faces growing scrutiny over his increasingly authoritarian and violent rhetoric, Fox News host Sean Hannity gave his longtime friend a chance to assure the American people that he wouldn’t abuse power or seek retribution if he wins a second term.

But instead of offering a perfunctory answer brushing off the warnings, Trump stoked the fire.

“Except for day one,” the GOP front-runner said Tuesday night before a live audience in Davenport, Iowa. “I want to close the border, and I want to drill, drill, drill.”

And in case anyone missed it, he reenacted the exchange.

“We love this guy,” Trump said of Hannity. “He says, ‘You’re not going to be a dictator, are you?’ I said: ‘No, no, no, other than day one. We’re closing the border, and we’re drilling, drilling, drilling. After that, I’m not a dictator.’”...........

One day turns to 15, and then we all know what happens after that.

Absolutely

Anybody who promises to be a dictator for only one day is promising they’ll be a dictator whenever it’s needed. And that need  will be defined by them.

When we had that 15 day lockdown from Covid, I told people I worked with that that lockdown will go past 15 days.

Opening up federal lands for energy exploration or taking action on illegal immigration is not being a dictator. There would be powers that Trump would have as head of the Executive Branch

His advisers must be guzzling Maalox by the gallon.

Trump could never be a dictator.  He doesn't know enough about government to run it.  He will always defer to the Swamp to make his decisions for him.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."     -Ayn Rand-

Bottom line is we need a conservative president leading our Republic, not a dictator.  Brandon has us headed towards socialism, we need someone heading us in the Right direction.

This was another one of Trump’s many stupid statements that’s going to be used to against him in the general but at the same time, all Donald Trump knows is the business world. In business, he is a dictator. His word is law. He has employees that work for him and have to follow his rules

But when your governing a constitutional republic, that mindset doesn’t work

And Trumpland, instead of denouncing their guy, has instead ratcheted up assassination talk. "They're gonna kill him!"

Well, maybe de-escalate all this inevitability crap and stand down.

What, you don't want a "republican" version of Brandon where the democrats and media(sorry for the repetition) are constantly telling us we misheard him or the biggy "it's his stutter". I agree Trump should learn to shut the F'k up and think before he speaks or better yet do way less speaking and putting his foot in his mouth. But hey it's Trump and the likelihood of that happening is about the same as the Earth reversing rotation.

You are correct, this is another one of Trump's many stupid statements.
Yes it is. But it is calculated and intentional. This is Trump's way of having fun.

From day one Trump has proven time and again that he is an expert at spinning people up over nonsense and making headlines. That is just what he did here. Anyone who believes that Trump will be an actual full-blown, real life dictator, is an idiot and a fool. If he has desires to be a dictator, the very last thing he would do is say it outloud.

Trump knows this. And he knows those people would say that about him no matter what. So, as usual, Trump throws the gas to set their hair on fire. Then he sits back and laughs that the entire nation and the entire news cycle is, once again, talking about nothing but Trump. He wouldn't have it any other way.

This is what he does. It is what he has always done. Who was it who said grow up and think like an adult for a change?

Also his way of losing votes.  Hope he finds that funny too.

And if you don't think these kind of comments that he allegedly says "just to have fun" or to "set people's hair on fire" cost him otherwise getable votes, you need to get out more.  There are large numbers of people for whom these kind of statements are the biggest reason they won't vote for him.

@Maj. Bill Martin
Trump is ALWAYS going to be the weird rich uncle. That is who and what he is, combined with the fact that he really just doesn't give a shit. From Trump's frame of thought, if he is elected or if he is not elected, his life will not change that much. Not saying this is true, but it is how he speaks about it.

Everybody keeps saying that I will be a dictator. OK? So I will just tell them 'yes, I will be a dictator' and watch them lose their minds. Don't know why anyone would be upset by this. I am only repeating what they have been saying for nearly 10 ten years. Why would they be surprised by this?

Trump is from the Elon school of public relations. Vote for me ... or don't vote for me. I will be fine either way. And go f**k yourself.

And this statement isn’t a stand alone statement. This goes along with promising his base to be their retribution and suggesting seizing private funds from private endowments for his own government project

I’m pretty safe in assuming that people don’t elect presidents to be their base’s retribution
