Perhaps those that want a particular committee may be persuaded to vote a certain way?
Committee assignments were made in January. And as you may or may not remember, one of the demands made by Gaetz and Co. was that the Speaker could not retaliate against members who refuse to vote a certain way by depriving them of committee assignments or primarying them. In other words, they
wanted a weak Speaker who lacked the ability to bully other members of the caucus. That was one of their express goals back in January.
I made a post back then that pointed out the impossibility of all of this. I said passing 12 appropriations bills with this narrow of a majority was almost impossible anyway, and that the hardliners made it even worse by weakening the coercive power of Speaker. To argue now that the Speaker should have put pressure on people is laughable - that's exactly what the hardliners wanted to prevent.
Of course, what they were thinking about at the time was it the Speaker might use those powers against
them. So they figured it was very clever of them to take those powers away from the Speaker. But it apparently didn't occur to their
teeny tiny little brains that would also deprive the Speaker of the ability to force through
their agenda.
I hope how much I despise them is coming through. I remember writing about all of this crap back in January and predicting this is exactly what would happen. And here we are.
