Fox’s Trey Gowdy Reports House Republicans Are At Each Other’s Throats and ‘Trying Couples Counseling For People Who Want to Kill Each Other’
Michael Luciano Oct 17th, 2023, 4:50 pm

Former Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) said it is an absolute mess behind the scenes on Capitol Hill as House Republicans try to elect a new speaker, saying he “cannot overstate how angry some Republican members are.”

On Tuesday, the House rejected Rep. Jim Jordan’s (R-OH) candidacy to become speaker, though lawmakers are expected to vote again on the issue soon. The failed bid comes the week after Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) withdrew his nomination because he did not have the votes needed, though Scalise never went through an official floor vote.

That failed bid came the week after the House ousted Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) from the position.

“I don’t think this is about Jimmy,” Gowdy, who is a weekend host on Fox News, told Martha MacCallum after calling in to The Story. “It is about his supporters. And that is what I am consistently hearing up to, and including in the last hour. It is not Jim Jordan. It is the fact that Kevin McCarthy was the victim of a drive-by shooting orchestrated by a small group of people and Stevie Scalise got one crack at it. What they said to Stevie, ‘Ok, you had your chance. You couldn’t get to 217 or 218. Now it’s not your chance anymore.'”

Gowdy was likely referring to the strong-arm tactics Jordan’s supporters have been reportedly using while lobbying on his behalf. He then offered a jarring assessment of the ongoing meetings Republicans are having at the Capitol.

They're pissy because the strong arm tactics they've used for decades are now being used against them, and they don't like it. They want business as usual.

Some conservatives convinced themselves that they were the only ones tough enough to stick to a position.  All they'd have to do is refuse to support anyone except Jordan, and the moderates would have no choice but to capitulate and support Jordan.

So, they destroyed McCarthy's chance, then destroyed Scalise's, and figure that meant everyone would have to fall in line behind Jordan.  That likely was Gaetz's plan all along.  Just play a game of chicken, and count on the other side to swerve.

The problem is that the non-FC Republicans weren't as spineless as the FC had assumed, and now they are refusing to swerve also. Complete deadlock.

The problem for the FC is that they have literally no other options.  If the rest of the caucus doesn't surrender, the FC is screwed.  But the others have the choice of cutting a deal with Democrats.

What "strong-arm tactics" did the moderates use for decades?  The conservatives and moderates both have always been free to vote exactly as their conscience dictated on legislation.

Intimidation of Members' spouses is counter-effective.

There aren't many Republicans with spines, but there may be just enough to deny Jim Jordan the Speakership.

The Magas may cost the GOP the House, or at least the Speakership with their schoolyard political tactics.

If they don't want committee assignments, leadership positions, and money to their district, you are correct.

This is "Whig-level" behavior.

The Pubbie/whigs have shown that even as a majority, they're unable to pick up the reins of power and move the wagon forward.

The Republicans are approaching the point where they no longer can function as a "national" party. In some states, they're still effective. Florida is an example.
But as a force on the national level, they could be all-but finished.

If things keep going for the Pubbies as they are now, they have perhaps 10-15 years left.
If that long.
After that, in Congress they'll become a bunch of "nowhere men".

What will replace them?
Perhaps something new that arises from the "MAGA movement"?

As that website used to say,

As I pointed earlier, Jordan ran against McCarthy in December, Gaetz and others supported and voted for McCarthy back then, and yet, they were not penalized in terms of committee assignments, etc..  What you're claiming happened just didn't.

Because they would have immediately voted McCarthy out.

You keep trying to slice and dice the timeline. This has been SOP for decades, it didn't just start happening yesterday.

We did, it was Jim Jordan who had 200 votes. But then guys like Don Bacon go on CNN and claim he got some some slurred voicemail from some guy and he can't vote for Jordan now because he was bullied or something. Not that it was Jordan's doing or fault or anything but we still can't vote for him because of it.

No, we had Scalise, and then the spoilt children threatened to make his life a living hell if he didn't drop out.  Jordan is a third-place loser, behind McCarthy and Scalise.

Gaetz and Jordan created this scorched-earth scenario, and now they'll have to live with it.  Spoilt little children.

Was Scalise even able to get 200 votes? Last I heard there were Republicans wanting to deal with Rats  but not a peep of support for Scalise.

He was the first nominee of the GOP, ahead of Jordan.  Jordan lost to Scalise in the GOP caucus.

Speaking of which, how's Jordan doing with the votes on the floor?  Did he lose any more votes to Jeffries?  Jeffries managed to get 212 last time; Jordan couldn't even break 200.  What a f**king loser.  Just like Trump, another f**king loser with a big fat mouth but without the wherewithal to back his mouth up.

So are you saying those 14 votes for McCarthy were a waste of time and he was a loser?

Yes.

The whole party is a bunch of losers. This whole country is a bunch of losers.

And at the risk of getting zotted like I did from TOS 15 years ago, they all deserve whatever destruction befalls us. The rest of us don't.
