New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez has been hit with federal corruption charges related to a years-long scheme in which he allegedly accepted bribes – including gold bars – in exchange for helping three businessmen and the country of Egypt, officials announced Friday.
The Democrat, 69 — and his wife Nadine Menendez — were charged with taking hundreds of thousands worth in bribes, according to a Manhattan federal indictment.

Somewhat surprisingly, Menendez did not give any indication of whether he would run for re-election next year (though he did say he would not resign, despite calls for him to do so from Gov. Phil Murphy and others).

Menendez: Cash in the jackets was from my savings account
By Samuel Chamberlain
Sen. Bob Menendez has just given a lengthy statement in English and Spanish from his longtime political stomping ground of Union City, NJ.
In addition to denying the charges, the 69-year-old tried to explain the cash that was found when federal agents searched his home earlier this year.
"For 30 years, I have withdrawn thousands of dollars in cash from my personal savings account, which I have kept for emergencies and because of the history of my family facing confiscation in Cuba," he says. "This may seem old-fashioned, but these were monies drawn from my personal savings account based on the income that I have lawfully derived over those 30 years."
