Ramaswamy: Former felons should be allowed to carry guns

The GOP presidential candidate fleshes out what it means to be a “Second Amendment absolutist” on a podcast.

Vivek Ramaswamy says convicted felons should be allowed to carry weapons.

Appearing on former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s podcast, set to air on Thursday, the Republican presidential candidate was asked to flesh out what it meant to be a “Second Amendment absolutist,” as Ramaswamy has labeled himself.

“Everyone has a gun?” asked Cuomo, once a prominent figure in Democratic Party politics. “Everyone has an assault weapon? A former felon? No background check? Concealed carry?”

“Has the right to,” Ramaswamy responded. “And I do think concealed carry is important, constitutional carry is important.”

He said background checks are “absolutely a legitimate part of the process” but that “law-abiding” gun ownership “deters many violent criminals from being able to roam the streets with guns as they do today.”

if he was a 2A absolutist, no restrictions at all would be promoted.

Not only ex-cons, but no need for any kind of permitting, concealed carry (why not out in the open?), anything.

But I think some rules are OK.  I can see allowing ex-cons, perhaps after a certain period.  I knew a terrific ex-con 20 years ago, a machinist who did a lot of my prototype work, and we had lots of talk.  He was so incredibly conservative and so honorable in his maturity.  He wasn’t allowed to vote and that came up.  Ok, I can see not allowing vote anymore, but why not firearms after he’s been out say 5 years?

This is kooky.

It IS "kooky"!  But it's necessary if you want to curb crime and bad behavior.

Take a look around.  All the major cities in our country have become hives of crime and chaos.

It's really no different than Deadwood, South Dakota or Dodge City, Kansas back in the Day.  Not even safe to walk you own dog in your neighborhood anymore...unless it's a Pit Bull.

I'm for it.

If an ex-con abuses the privilege, put his ass back in jail with  additional time due to him being an ex-con using a firearm to commit a crime.

I am already declared on this issue. MANY ex-cons are denied subsistence - cannot hunt.. Also cannot protect themselves... Around here, that's a big deal.

I don't agree with convicted felons not being able to vote.

States' argument for having to have a driver's license with the claim it's a "PRIVILEGE" is also total nonsense.

If you pay sales tax, you have use of the roads.

Yeah, I don’t buy that “privilege” to drive either.

It all boils down to the court system.  If you have a problem with someone, sue them.  If someone hit your car, sue them.  Why does it really help to have a license or registration?  Of course it helps but why necessary?
