Pittsburgh police respond to active shooter after residents hear ‘hundreds of rounds’ fired

By Ronny Reyes
August 23, 2023

Pittsburgh police are warning residents to stay away from an active shooter situation near UPMC Children’s Hospital after residents heard “hundreds of rounds” fired on Wednesday morning.

Police have closed down the 4800 block of Broad Street and North Mathilda Street in the Garfield neighborhood after a gunfight broke out when police were serving an eviction notice in the area, WPXI 11 reports.

The suspect is believed to be barricaded in the block and has shot down two drones sent out by law enforcement.

No officers have been reported injured as of yet.

Pittsburgh Police SWAT has taken over the scene, with officials describing the scene as an “extremely active situation with shots continuing to be fired.

The shooter is now kaput. Cops sent in a drone, figured out where he was, and blasted the heck out of him.
He was squatting in a house he believed he had some right to live in. Neighbors said he had behaved erratically and violently in recent days.

Apparently, he was shooting at drones and not people - at least if the Fox report was correct.

Not true. He fired hundreds of rounds haphazardly into the neighborhood - where the houses are very close to one another. People were ducking for cover. An officer was grazed, I believe.

Yes, he did shoot at one of the police drones, too. But they sent in another, which located him and enabled them to take him out.

He was living in a house his brother had owned. He had no legal right to the house, and when his brother died he was served with eviction papers.
Apparently, the guy was a nut who was well known to police. He was one of those people who declare themselves a "sovereign entity" not subject to the normal laws everybody else has to abide by.
So, when the cops came to evict him, he shot at them. And the inevitable result ensued. He was well ventilated by the police.

Thanks for adding the background, @goatprairie
Some of the neighbors reported his behavior had been concerning, to say the least. Clearly was a nut.
