New Yorkers will pay double for Con Ed gas, electricity by 2025 — and will see a steep 9% increase next month

New Yorkers could see their Con Edison gas and electricity bills more than double in the next two years due to a newly approved rate hike by the state’s top public utility regulator.

Next month alone, Con Ed will spike rates across the city by a staggering 9% as part of the three-year rate plan greenlighted by the state Public Service Commission Thursday.

An average Big Apple resident who uses 600-kilowatt hours of electricity per month will see their bill surge by an estimated $14.44 — or 9.1% — in August, a commission analysis of the plan shows.

Then, that customer will have to dig even further into their pockets when monthly bills rise by another $7.20 (4.2%) in January next year and roughly $2.43 (1.4%) come January 2025.

The utility behemoth’s gas customers will also feel the pinch.

A typical Con Ed customer that uses an average of 100 therms in a month will notice their bill increase a hefty $17.28 — or 8.4% — from next month, per the PSC analysis.

It’ll go up again in January by an average of $14.90 (6.7%) and then $15.61 (6.6%) the following year.

Democrats whine about Con Ed hikes caused by their own dumb policies

Better sit down before you open your next Con Ed bill: Rates are set to soar, starting next month — and double over the next two years.

If you’re a progressive, you can’t complain. What did you think would happen, based on your anti-fossil-fuel, big-spending, anti-business agenda?

On Thursday, the state’s Public Service Commission OK’d hikes of 9.1% for electricity and 8.4% for gas, starting in August, along with additional jumps though 2025. At that point, typical bills will have doubled, from about $70 a month to $140 — or an extra $840 a year.

A whining letter from the City Council demanded that Gov. Kathy Hochul use her executive powers to stop the pain.

The letter called out an “already dire affordability crisis” and included specious worries about poor New Yorkers.

That “affordability crisis,” notably, is also of the left’s own making, thanks to its anti-housing, inflation-fueling polices.

Why is Con Ed hiking rates?

ConEd bills are skyrocketing, and the ‘green’ policies of Cuomo and Hochul are to blame

By Daniel Turner
July 21, 2023

New Yorkers unhappy with Con Edison’s huge rate increases have two people to blame: disgraced former Governor Andrew Cuomo for the green agenda he implemented, and Kathy Hochul for doubling down on his failures.

Both are completely ignorant on energy, and their policies are dangerous to the state’s overall economy and the well-being of its citizens, especially those without cushion in their budget to sustain the higher price tags.

New York consumes a known amount of electricity each day.

Everything from a Park Avenue elevator to an air conditioner in Buffalo needs electricity, and that electricity must come from somewhere.

As with any fixed commodity, the greater the demand with a limited supply means higher prices.

Any teen who wanted to see Taylor Swift in concert understands this.

Cuomo did not.

First, Cuomo went after New York’s coal plants.

Coal once produced 16% of the State’s electricity; it now produces 0%.

It’s part of the plan to be 100% “zero-emission electricity” by 2040.

It’s up for debate whether these policies make the air cleaner or people happier, especially after Special Presidential Envoy for Climate (SPEC) John Kerry came up empty in his climate negotiations with the world’s largest polluter, China.

But one thing is certain: costs are higher.

Next, Cuomo went after nuclear power, which even France relies on for 70% of its electricity.

It was not that long ago that safe, reliable nuclear power produced 33% of New York’s electricity, but Cuomo had national ambitions that required adherence to the green cult.

When he closed Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant in 2021, another 2,000 megawatts of electricity generation — nearly one quarter of New York City’s needs — went offline.

Again, the only tangible results so far have been higher prices.
