Bag, shoe counterfeiters back in force on NYC’s Canal Street: ‘More illegal sales than ever’

By Dean Balsamini
July 15, 2023

Peddlers of fake luxe goods are back with a vengeance along Canal Street, frustrated residents told The Post.

Crackdowns on the area’s booming trade in bogus high-end goods put a ding — but not a dent — in the illicit industry, with vendors still out in force hawking $150 “Nike” sneakers, $150 “Rolex” watches, $140 “Louis Vuitton” bags and $35 “Gucci” bucket hats, The Post found on a recent visit.

And the sidewalk sideshow is saturating not only Canal, but has expanded to surrounding spots in lower Manhattan.

“Today there are more illegal sales than ever…almost every square foot of sidewalk between Broadway and Church is covered with fake merchandise,” Frederick Kinney wrote in a petition signed by over 1,000 people urging officials to clean-up Canal. “IMPROVEMENT? THAT IS FAKE NEWS!!!”

“The crowds of people selling bogus stuff is totally oft-putting and illegal and creates human pollution and makes walking on Canal Street intimidating and uncomfortable,” concurred Richard Kurtz. “The police have been useless in dealing with this problem which has been a factor in our neighborhood for years.”

When police don't or can't "sweat the small stuff", the "small stuff" breeds like over-caffeinated bunnies, and much "small stuff" grows into "big stuff".
If, as anti-Covid-vaxxers claim, https://www.poynter.org/fact-checking/2021/robert-f-kennedy-jr-said-the-covid-19-vaccine-is-the-deadliest-vaccine-ever-made-thats-not-true/ , https://gospelnewsnetwork.org/2021/11/23/covid-shots-are-the-deadliest-vaccines-in-medical-history/ , The Vaccine is deadly, where in the US have Pfizer and Moderna hidden the millions of bodies of those who died of "vaccine injury"? Is reality a Big Pharma Shill?

Millions now living should have died. Anti-Covid-Vaxxer ghouls hardest hit.

NYPD can't keep up with violent crime, let alone fake Fendi purses. Don't expect the FBI to care. They have pro-lifers and conservatives to shut down.

Exactly.  That, in a nutshell, is so-called broken-windows policing.

“The crowds of people selling bogus stuff is totally oft-putting and illegal and creates human pollution and makes walking on Canal Street intimidating and uncomfortable,”

First off, I have walked Canal Street and seen the street vendors there many times. I have also seen similar vendors in other major cities around the world. I don't find them the least bit intimidating or uncomfortable.  I quite enjoy rummaging around and looking at their stuff, even though I rarely buy anything.

Secondly, does anyone actually buy this stuff thinking it is the real thing? I dare say precious few are that stupid.  Yes, I know that this stuff is "illegal" because of Trademark laws. In my opinion, Trademark infringement should not be a criminal offense. It should be a simple tort, enforceable only by civil action between private parties.  Government has enough to do without protecting Nike's swoosh or Rolex's crown.  Why should my tax dollars be used to prop up their brands so that they can charge exorbitant prices for shoes and watches?

I do prescribe to the broken window approach to law enforcement, but no one is breaking any windows here. These sellers are for the most part immigrants who are trying to benefit from free-market capitalism. I say leave them alone. Better that they learn how to make money as capitalists who sell their goods to consumers who voluntarily buy from them, than socialists who make money for doing nothing and voting for a political party to give them "something for nothing."

Years ago I went to a flea market in Budapest, Hungary.  99% of the "stuff" they had there was counterfeit.  They had Nike shoes, sweats, you name it they had it.  The quality was very very poor though.

I recently read a novel that included a storyline about knockoff purses (and other items). As one character observed, the real victims are the enslaved children working in sweatshops somewhere overseas to make the fake products for American women who don't want to pay the full price of a Gucci or Michael Kors.

If Nike did not also have sweat shops, I might agree.

That's why I don't buy Nike products. They're usually inferior, but mostly because of the slave labor that produced them.

Maybe Hizzonor The Great Black Male can find a way to get some sales tax rev from the street vendors to replace the losses from legit retailers leaving NYC?
