Is it a big surprise that they are now going to try to sweep away all the Hunter Biden mess with a neat little plea agreement where he gets no real punishment — and that only goes to his individual actions, not the big questions of money laundering/influence peddling that involve Joe Biden? The only question was how much gall they would have to do it in the face of the growing evidence against Joe Biden, while also going after former President Donald Trump at record speed.

Now we see this sweet plea deal after five years of delaying action.

Both former president Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) were among the people who predicted that it was likely coming.

In May, Cruz said if we saw Hunter indicted for individual gun/tax crimes, that would mean be “the tell.”

As Cruz said, now they’re going to try to say, “He’s a troubled soul,” he had substance abuse issues, “but look how fair we are!” Now they can target Trump, which is what they want to do, Cruz observed. “That will be the tell if they focus on individual crimes related to Hunter and they seal off what makes this a matter of public concern which is the connection to Joe Biden. The millions Hunter made selling access to Daddy.”

“Merrick Garland doesn’t want to get near the growing evidence of corruption” that’s touching Joe Biden, Cruz added.

Get ready for several months of media outlets claiming Hunter Biden’s corruption to be “old news.” The Department of Justice just cut a deal with the president’s son to reduce his tax-fraud charges to misdemeanors. Hunter will plead guilty to a felony firearm offense, but will enter a diversion program to avoid prison:

    The Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney for Delaware has reached a plea agreement with Hunter Biden, in which he is expected to plead guilty to two federal misdemeanor counts of failing to pay his taxes. Biden also faces a separate gun possession charge that will likely be dismissed if he meets certain conditions, according to court documents filed on Tuesday.

    Two sources familiar with the agreement told NBC News that it includes a provision in which the U.S. Attorney has agreed to recommend probation for Biden for his tax violations. Legal experts also said that the tax and gun charges will likely not result in any jail time for President Joe Biden’s son.

What about the alleged corruption involving foreign influence and payments of millions of dollars into Biden Inc-related LLCs? Yeah. that’s going away, for now:

The resolution suggests that prosecutors did not find cause to file charges related to Hunter Biden’s dealings with foreign entities or other wrongdoing.

We can be certain that the White House will claim that as vindication. Get ready for Biden to start mimicking Donald Trump’s “witch hunt” mantra as House Republicans keep the heat on their own separate investigation into corruption and influence peddling. And the media, which buried the original Hunter laptop story effectively for more than a year, will be only too happy to mouth along, accusing Republicans of “seizing” and “pouncing” on a poor hapless family member.

What a breathtaking and damaging act of misdirection. After five years of investigation into a host of criminal acts by Hunter Biden, the Department of Justice (DOJ) finally brought charges against the president’s wayward son. But while the DOJ hopes the public focuses on words like “charges” and “guilty” to form an image of accountability for all, it’s letting Hunter walk away with the kind of slap on the wrist most defendants can only dream about from inside a prison cell.

In the same breath in which DOJ announced it was filing charges against Hunter Biden, it also stated that the case had already been resolved. Hunter will plead guilty to and serve probation for two tax fraud misdemeanors while a felony firearm possession charge will disappear after he completes pretrial diversion. It’s a resolution that if the defendant’s last name weren’t Biden would sound almost too good to be true.

The feds are notoriously tough on firearms. Nationally, for example, 94.2 percent of federal firearms convictions in 2022 involved some prison time, and the median sentence was 39 months.

Of course, Hunter won’t even have to end up with a conviction. This is an even rarer event. In 2021, fewer than 1 percent of cases filed by U.S. attorneys in federal court resulted in the kind of pretrial diversion offered to Hunter.

It’s that disparity between Hunter’s case and everybody else’s that’s the true problem, not necessarily the sentence itself.  ...

A big-shot Hollywood lawyer reportedly paid off Hunter Biden’s delinquent taxes — which a source told The Post amounted to more than $2 million — as President Biden’s notoriously troubled son awaits the results of a Delaware grand jury’s investigation into his personal finances.

Kevin Morris, an entertainment attorney and novelist who earned a fortune representing the co-creators of “South Park” and won a Tony Award as the co-producer of “The Book of Mormon,” footed Hunter Biden’s overdue taxes totaling over $2 million — more than twice what was previously reported, a source familiar with conversations between the two told The Post.

Morris, whom Hunter Biden’s friends call his latest “sugar brother,” has also been funding the 52-year-old’s lifestyle in Los Angeles — including his rent and living expenses, the source said.

The attorney has also been advising the president’s son on how to structure his art sales, according to the source.

When The Post attempted to contact Morris at his Malibu residence to ask about his dealings with Hunter Biden, his wife slammed the door in the reporter’s face and refused to answer questions.

Yes, there is a gift tax.  I believe the annual exclusion amount is now about $15k or $16k.  For gifts over that amount, the donor must either claim a portion of his/her lifetime exemption amount (if it hasn't already been used up) or pay gift tax on the amount that exceeds the annual exclusion amount.

That's a good catch, and since it indicates that approval of a political appointee - the Deputy Attorney General - is required for diversion in cases such as Hunter's, the fact that he got diverted clearly demonstrates that the resolution of his case was a political matter, not a legal matter.
