When I was based at FOB-2 in Kontum during the VN war,we had a "Guido" straight out of NYC show up at the camp as a new 1st Lt "Hatchet Force" officer.

Guy was a real "hoot" from the start. Probably no more than 20-21  years old,and subject to say or do anything at any  moment.

Started bragging about some of the stuff he had done as a kid in NYC,and how he had to get a waiver approved in order to even be allowed to enlist because he had been arrested as a 17 or 18 year old kid for "impersonating a SS Officer" while pretending to be a SS agent and bodyguard for President Kennedy and his wife during a street parade. He had dressed up in a suit,and since he was one of those "Guido guys" who had to shave twice a day and was a mass of muscle,he got away with it for long enough to have his photo taken walking along side the Presidential Caddy convertible with his left hand on the front fender.

Which pretty much caused everybody to admire him.

Guy had big brass balls,so he was assigned to be a Hatchet Force assistant CO. Trouble was he made more noise going through  the jungle than a herd of elephants,and was so clumsy  he fell off a mountain trail going up a mountain,and had to have a helicopter come in and get him to take him back to the medical clinic to treat him.

Ok,for those who don't know,one aspect of SOG in VN is that "officially,we didn't exist" other than in an office building in Saigon.

Which meant that we were NOT a part of any organized military supply chain.

Which also meant that we had to buy or steal pretty much all our supplies,including material to build the buildings we slept in,our mess hall,our food,etc,etc,etc.

Which meant we need full-time teams of "scroungers" to travel around VN and visit with supply SGT's and other disreputable people in order to supply  our needs.

To aid in this necessary quest,we even had some local VN women make "VC and NVA Battle Flags" for us as trade goods,and then the cooks would sprinkle the blood from slaughtered mess hall chickens or pigs all over the flags,and shoot them full of bullet holes in order to be able to sell them for big bucks to buy what we needed,or to just trade them for what we needed.

So,I am in the orderly room one day trading BS with the 1st Sgt,when he got a phone call from the MP's in Saigon informing us that they had  arrested one of our officers for the felony  theft of a 3/4 ton USAF truck that was filled with a truck load of stolen USAF air-conditioners.

Well,that caused the 1st Sgt to call the Colonel to come to the phone and deal with it. The Col told the MP officer to fill out the charge sheet and sent it back to Kontum with the Criminal,and he would take care of the charges there.

We all had a good laugh over  this,and figured  we  would be seeing him in a couple of days,and sure enough,a couple of days  later he came driving a stolen USAF 3/4 ton truck into the camp,and it was loaded with brand-new stolen USAF air conditioners.

The Lt said he knew the truck and ac's were impounded at the air field in Saigon ,so he waited until a Black Bird (USAF C-123/C-130 cargo planes that were assigned to service SF camps) was getting ready  to take off,so he just stole the truck and ac's again,and drove it up the ramp and had it chained down for the flight back to Kontum.

His "Punishment" for this dastardly deed was a Bronze Star for Meritorious Service".

EVERYBODY  in VN wanted air-conditioners,and thanks to  this young officer,EVERY hootch in the camp was a refuge from the heat.

Just because you are in a combat zone,that doesn't mean you have to live without comforts.
