Freedom Caucus promises "reckoning" over McCarthy debt deal
Zachary Basu

    Zachary BasuAndrew Solender

Right-wing furor over the debt ceiling deal reached a boiling point Tuesday, producing the first public threats to Kevin McCarthy's speakership since he secured the gavel in January's tortured, 15-ballot election.

Why it matters: The House GOP's remarkable unity has been the story of this Congress so far. McCarthy has successfully navigated one of the narrowest majorities in U.S. history, tamping down rebellions and defying his doubters at virtually every turn — until now.

"The Republican conference has been torn asunder," Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) declared at a House Freedom Caucus press conference Tuesday afternoon, calling for a "reckoning."

"This is a career-defining vote for every Republican," said Rep. Dan Bishop (R-N.C.), accusing McCarthy of "forfeiting" the unity the House GOP had forged through the backroom talks that anointed him speaker.

In the end, I predict it will pass with more Dem votes than GOP.

A Motion to Vacate needs to be done.  McCarthy lied to the HFC to obtain their votes for Speaker.

Vote ended and with 5 reps not voting yet, the dems passed the vote with 30 votes. 29 No votes from reps.  Schumer will take it up quickly and there are still those arguing we got a good deal.

McCarthy lied?  Of course he did.  He's never lost those RINO horns and never will.

We didn't get jack.  All we got was more debt and a bunch of IRS agents now enabled to do whatever the heck they want.

That vote was on the Rule to send it to the floor.  There is still a floor vote on the Bill itself.  It appears more Dems than GOP are voting for the Bill.

It's all part of the Screw Conservatives Movement and Trump is Chairman of the Board.

The fools here who supported McCarthy are getting a first class lesson on what constitutes capitulation.

Congrats....  you earned it.

Paul Ryan 2.0

If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

Yes and perhaps even worse.  McCarthy was an extremely poor choice; he's popular with his fellow RINO's and DEMS. I am hoping that somehow this costs him his seat.

It will move onto the Senate where Mitch will be all too eager to hand Chuckie his vote of approval.

I liked Rand's version of the bill -- but it won't even get the recognition nor consideration it deserves.  Sad.

Down by one point late in the fourth quarter, the Republicans took the ball and drove all the way down the field to their opponent's one-yard-line, only to have McCarthy punt it away on first down.  Every single advantage the Republicans had has been squandered.  Every single one.  The absolute best outcome they possibly could have had was 100% guaranteed if they had done nothing.  They had the only bill on the table - a bill that had already passed the House.  The Democrats had nothing.  No bill.  No alternative.  Nothing to negotiate against.  Only the Republican bill.  Yet McCarthy decided to draft a bill for them - a bill that gave them everything they could possibly want with zero mandates for spending cuts - a bill that gives them a cushion for another $4 trillion in deficit spending, enough to get them through the next election.

Instead of milking this for everything it was worth - monthly debt ceiling increases that would yield more concessions each time - McCarthy rolled the next 20 opportunities into one massive bill, and squandered everything.  Everything!

Let's remember who was in here cheering the Conservatives on during the Speaker fight.  Let's remember the members here who warned against McCarthy, and who cheered each and every time he came up short.  And let us never forget the members here who ridiculed them for it, who called for a quick McCarthy confirmation in unison for their preferred Presidential candidate.  I sure as hell won't.

For posterity's sake:

I gotta ask, @Right_in_Virginia .  Is your hard-on for a Swamp-loving Establishment hack like Kevin McCarthy because of Trump supporting him?  Or is it because Mike Pence supports him?
