Sen. Dianne Feinstein shielded from journalists at Capitol: report
By Josh Christenson

Sen. Dianne Feinstein is being shielded from interacting with reporters and photographers on Capitol Hill, following her return to Congress from a months-long battle with health complications.

Aides are physically barring members of the press from interacting with the 89-year-old senator, and the office of the Senate sergeant-at-arms last week prohibited journalists from taking pictures of or documenting Feinstein’s arrival at the Capitol, the Los Angeles Times reported.

A spokesman for Feinstein (D-Calif.) said in a statement that the senator’s office has coordinated with Capitol Police “for safety reasons” but has not asked officers to stop photojournalists from taking pictures.

“Our office has not asked photographers to not take pictures of her in her wheelchair,” Adam Russell said. “We did ask, and continue to ask for safety reasons, that photographers and reporters give her space, particularly when entering and exiting her vehicle.”

The Senate sergeant-at-arms’ office did not respond to a request for comment.

Feinstein is in a “frightening” condition, one source close to the senator told the New York Times last week, as she has suffered vision and balance impairments and facial paralysis known as Ramsay Hunt syndrome from her case of shingles.

To name just a few of her afflictions.

She's being protected for the very same reason el presidente hasn't held an actual press conference in months and months: mental incapacity.

This is not surprising. She clearly is in bad shape and doesn't need to deal with a press gaggle, where every question is about her bad health. Ghouls.

The media joins Dem pile-on against Feinstein after 'concealing' Fetterman's health condition in 2022

The subjects of mental and physical competency in elected office has become a fierce debate in recent months. Back in February, Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley called for a mandatory cognitive test for politicians 75 and older, a not-so-subtle dig at 80-year-old President Biden and her 76-year-old GOP rival former President Trump. Poll after poll have shown voters, even among Democrats, increasingly concerned about Biden's age as he seeks reelection in 2024. And his presidency has not been short of gaffes, verbal stumbles and various memory lapses.

Such health concerns have also bled into the Senate, particularly towards two Democrats.

The first is California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who returned to Capitol Hill in early May following a roughly three-month absence due to shingles, which was later revealed to have led to neurological complications from Ramsay Hunt syndrome that affected her brain and face. This came following months of reports alleging Feinstein's mental decline.   ...

Feinstein, who is just days away from turning 90 years old and is set to formally retire at the end of her term in January 2025, has been increasingly facing calls from the media for her resignation, notably echoing a growing sentiment among Democrats. Before her return to Capitol Hill, The New York Times editorial board wrote "If she cannot fulfill her obligations to the Senate and to her constituents, she should resign and turn over her responsibilities to an appointed successor."

Her absence fueled consternation in the legacy press, particularly since she was widely blamed from halting the confirmation of Biden's judicial nominees as a key vote on the Senate Judiciary Committee. In April, The Los Angeles Times editorial board hinted for her to step down, writing "With the balance of power so tenuous in Washington and the stakes so high at every election, there’s no leeway to keep missing critical votes. We wish Feinstein well in the coming days as she considers perhaps the most difficult decision of her long, storied career."  ...

Feinstein, Back in the Senate, Relies Heavily on Staff to Function

When Senator Dianne Feinstein entered a hearing room this month to reclaim her seat on the Senate Judiciary Committee after a monthslong absence, she was accompanied by a phalanx of aides.

Two staff members settled the 89-year-old California Democrat into a chair at the dais as the assembled senators greeted their ailing colleague with a round of applause. When Ms. Feinstein spoke — during a vote on one of several of President Biden’s judicial nominees whose approval had awaited her return — she appeared to read from a piece of paper handed to her by a female aide seated behind her. ...

The aide knelt next to her and whispered into her ear in between votes — popping up repeatedly from her seat to confer with the senator, at one point clearing away the paper Ms. Feinstein had read from and presenting her with a folder that appeared to contain background information about the nominees.

The scene was typical of Ms. Feinstein’s day-to-day existence on Capitol Hill, where she is surrounded by a retinue of staff members who serve not only the roles of typical congressional aides — advising on policy, keeping tabs on the schedule, drafting statements and speeches — but also as de facto companions to a senator whose age, frail health and memory issues make it difficult for her to function alone.  ...

They push her wheelchair, remind her how and when she should vote and step in to explain what is happening when she grows confused. ...
