‘Dangerous Trend’: Medical Schools Are Ditching Standardized Tests In The Name Of ‘Diversity’

Medical schools are continuing to drop Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) requirements in favor of alternative routes available to prospective applicants, experts told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Dropping the MCAT in favor of holistic admission practices may negatively impact the medical profession by “eliminating” a “standard for schools to consider when admitting students who demonstrate the aptitude to be good doctors,” Laura Morgan, Do No Harm program manager, told the DCNF.

“It’s not adequate because it is subjective, as opposed to standardized tests which are objective metrics,” she explained.

A developing medical school trend to ditch the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) requirement may not bode well for the future of the profession, medical watchdog group Do No Harm told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.

I had an uncle (now doing the great dirt nap) who tried to get into Michigan after high school but was rejected.  He took control of the situation and went to a community to get his grades up and was eventually accepted.  From there, he went on to become recognized as a member of who's who in America in electrical engineering.  He wasn't accepted because there weren't enough Germans at the U of M.  He did it through hard work.  These "diversity" selections could do the same except individuals aren't expected to apply themselves today and take control of their lives.

  • WE are NOT ok!
This is very alarming.  The medical community (at least around here) has much to be desired already.  COVID created shortages, doctors offices to close and though some positions are being replaced, the replacements for the most part lack knowledge and experience.  As an example; I was seen by a physician's assistant who works for my cardio-thoracic surgeon.   I asked several yes or no questions and the response I received, was "well I guess so" or "I think so", at one question she simply shrugged her shoulders.  So, it was a waste of time and nothing was accomplished.  There's just no where to turn as they are affiliated with the Cleveland Clinic and supposedly the doctor/facility that I went to is in the top 50 in the U.S.  To me, they are a joke!

Ditching standardized tests or lowering the bar will only make things worse.
I Believe in the United States of America as a Government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a republic; a sovereign nation of many sovereign states; a perfect union one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.  I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it; to support its Constitution; to obey its laws to respect its flag; and to defend it against all enemies.

Could we reach the point where one will prefer an immigrant, foreign-educated doctor or surgeon because chances are they went to [foreign] medical schools that actually still maintained real "standards" for their students?

Yes

I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.

Must’ve been a new grad

From my experience, with increased patient loads, doctors and nurses are getting burnt out

One of the reasons I dislike groups like Kaiser, they are money mills and have been for decades. I found a PC doctor that is an Internal Medicine specialist and he has a small practice like you would have found when we were kids. I always get prompt responses from his people, fast appointment dates and always calls me quickly with test results. I really lucked out because truthfully my primary concern when I picked him was the hospital he had privileges with. But I have seen the other side with PA's that are inexperienced and non committal too.
