Federal judge blocks abortion pill approval
Nathaniel Weixel, Zach Schonfeld

In an unprecedented decision, a federal judge in Texas has issued a stay that will shut down the prescribing and distribution of mifepristone in seven days, one of two drugs used for medication abortions that has been on the market in the U.S. for more than two decades.

District Court Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, an appointee of former President Trump, gave the government a weeklong window to appeal and seek emergency relief before his ruling goes into effect.

The FDA appealed the decision to the conservative 5th Circuit Court of Appeals later on Friday.

Separately on Friday, U.S. District Judge Thomas Rice, an appointee of former President Obama who sits in the Eastern District of Washington, blocked the FDA from “altering the status quo and rights as it relates to the availability of Mifepristone” in 17 states and Washington, D.C. that filed a lawsuit saying the drug was too tightly regulated.

The dueling rulings could have far-reaching implications for access to abortion nationwide, as well as the authority of the entire Food and Drug Administration. The dispute could eventually reach the Supreme Court.

Ocasio-Cortez: 'The Biden Administration Should Ignore' Court Abortion Pill Ruling
Ian Hanchett

On Friday’s broadcast of CNN’s “AC360,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) reacted to a federal court ruling invalidating FDA approval of an abortion pill by stating that “the Biden administration should ignore this ruling.”

Ocasio-Cortez said, “I think we’ve been preparing and anticipating for there being these egregious overreaches by members of the judiciary appointed by a right-wing Republican Party, whose goal for a very long time was to just pack these courts with partisan judges, often underqualified or completely unqualified for their role. And so, there has been thought, I believe, given to this. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) has already issued statements, for example, advising what we should do in a situation like this — which I concur — which is that I believe that the Biden administration should ignore this ruling. I think that we — the courts have the legitimacy and they rely on the legitimacy of their rulings, and what they are currently doing is engaged in an unprecedented and dramatic erosion of the legitimacy of the courts. It is the justices themselves, through the deeply partisan and unfounded nature of these rulings that are undermining their own enforcement.”

Host Anderson Cooper asked, “But is that — do we want to live in a world where the government can decide to ignore a federal court ruling?”

Democrats are protesting the Republican use of Democrat tactics (i.e. judge-shopping).
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

Democrats have been doing it for nearly 200 years.
