Former Arkansas Gov Asa Hutchinson announces 2024 presidential run

Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson formally declared a 2024 presidential campaign on Sunday.

Hutchinson is the third Republican to announce a campaign and will face off against former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and former President Donald Trump. Several another figures are expected to enter the race but have yet to do so.

"I have made a decision, and my decision is I'm going to run for president of the United States," Hutchinson told ABC News. "While the formal announcement will be later in April, in Bentonville, I want to make it clear to you…I am going to be running. And the reason is, I've traveled the country for six months, I hear people talk about the leadership of our country. I'm convinced that people want leaders that appeal to the best of America, and not simply appeal to our worst instincts."

Hutchinson has mulled a potential presidential run for months, receiving support from a new super PAC in February.

He remains a long-shot candidate in what is expected to become a crowded field, however. While his only announced opponents are Haley and Trump, former Vice President Mike Pence is expected to announce his campaign soon........

Unless Ron DeSantis gets in, except for the already announced candidate with the name I can never pronounce or spell, the GOP primary is going be a fight over who can spend the most and who can grow the size of the government with ideas that have been shown to fail

For now, unless something changes, I’ve pretty much written off the 2024 election on the presidential level
I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.

Obviously Hutchison isn't favored in here.

Nothing wrong with the guy, while in Congress ACU rating was 83.  Not perfect, but decent.

Lots of swamp tenure in alphabet agencies, so that's a negative/.  From Bentonville, so I wonder how deep he is in Walmart's pockets.

He's 71, with minimal name recognition.  Several better other choices.

Age is definitely a deterrent anymore for me.

So far the only other choices are Trump or Haley.  Not a fan.

Seriously? Suggesting Trump drop out. Apparently the guy is delusional.

Asa Hutchinson to run for president, urges Trump to drop out

Former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson announced his 2024 U.S. presidential candidacy on Sunday with a proclamation that set him apart from other current or potential Republican candidates: former President Donald Trump should step aside from the race.

In an interview with ABC's "This Week," Hutchinson urged Trump, who launched his candidacy in November, to drop out of the race after the former president was indicted in New York following an investigation into hush money payments to a porn star.

"I mean, first of all, the office is more important than any individual person. And so for the sake of the office of the presidency, I do think that's too much of a sideshow and distraction and he needs to be able to concentrate on his due process and there is a presumption of innocence," Hutchinson said.......

There was a time I would have backed Hutch... But he was going wobbly even before he left congress. Been too long. Don't remember all the wobbles. But I already know I will tear him down on his record.

His ACU record will be high 70s or low 80s ... Very unlikely I will support or vote for him.

Quote
This piece, like Asa Hutchinson’s bid for the GOP presidential nomination, will be brief, simply because there isn’t much to say on the matter that isn’t intuitive.

The former Arkansas governor’s presidential campaign is dead in the water. Much like Rep. Eric Swalwell’s bid for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination in 2020, Hutchinson’s campaign is a calculated, egotistical exercise in which he hopes to further his name recognition and commercial viability. After all, there is a lot of money in being a good (read as “useless”) Republican. Dare we forget his onanistic lifestyle of holding elected office while refusing to exercise the mandate of political power to protect his constituents?

Having repeatedly invoked the mantle of “limited government” to defend his inaction on the chemical castration and genital mutilation of children, Hutchinson is woefully out of step with the voters his campaign would have to win over. He’s gone so far as to publically lament the “intolerant ways” in which Republican voters and grassroots conservatives resist having transgenderism pushed upon the nation’s youth. He’s even allowed Covid hysteria to inform his decision-making and advocated for re-masking schoolchildren as late as July 2021.

Hutchinson, like every other political entity vowing to stop Donald Trump, will undoubtedly be able to raise millions of dollars from people who dislike the 45th president and prefer a time in which elitist bipartisanship furthered the neoliberal strip-mining of American culture by gutting our republic of its civic norms and reducing the U.S. economy to little more than the tinkering of numbers on a spreadsheet.

With these millions of dollars, Hutchinson will be able to enrich himself and his allies through political nonprofits and PACs. He will likely get a book deal for the courageous act of being a Republican who repeats Washington Post headlines. And, should his campaign even last this long, he will probably drop out before the first 2024 primary contest. ...

In other words, as for so many presidential candidates of any political party, this is just a get-rich-quick scheme.

In terms of obscurity, Hutchison throwing his hat in the ring is right up there with Pat Paulsen's POTUS runs (in 1968,1972,1976,1980,1984,1988,1992,1996) that I remember as a kid.  But at least Paulsen was funny.

Asa has a better chance of winning the general election than he does for winning the primaries.

Good point, except Horn Dog was a young 40 something politico with significant upside and unprecedented political savy.

Name recogntion a year out and being from Arkansas is about the only correlatable factoids among these two.

I don't know, his wiki page has a decent list of things he did that warrant further digging. He has no "Liberty Score" as a governor, so my cheat sheet has been canceled.
