Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) will travel to New York to protest the indictment of former President Donald Trump next week, the congresswoman said on Friday.
Greene will travel to the Empire State on Tuesday, which is the day Trump is “likely” to turn himself in to New York law enforcement officials, according to his legal team. The Georgia Republican called on others to join her, urging supporters to “protest the unconstitutional WITCH HUNT!” Her trip comes as Congress will be in recess for the next two weeks.
Law enforcement officers in New York have begun implementing tighter security protocols in preparation for possible protests over the weekend, with the New York Police Department instructing all its officers to report in full uniform on Friday. City officials said they have not received any “credible threats” but will remain prepared “to respond to events happening on the ground and keep New Yorkers safe."
The increased security measures come after a grand jury in Manhattan voted to indict Trump on Thursday even on charges related to a hush money case that emerged during his first White House run in 2016. The indictment marks the first time a former president has been hit with criminal charges.
The timeline of Trump’s arraignment is not clear, although Manhattan officials said they are working with the former president’s legal team to coordinate a surrender. If Trump complies in accordance with the request, the former president would be photographed and fingerprinted in a New York state courthouse.
