NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump said in a social media post that he expects to be arrested Tuesday as a New York prosecutor is eyeing charges in a case examining hush money paid to women who alleged sexual encounters with the former president.

Trump said in a post on his Truth Social network early Saturday that “illegal leaks” from the Manhattan district attorney’s office indicate that “THE FAR & AWAY LEADING REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE & FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, WILL BE ARRESTED ON TUESDAY OF NEXT WEEK.”

Messages left Saturday with the district attorney’s office were not immediately returned. Representatives for Trump did not immediately respond to calls for comment.

Trump did not provide any details on social media about how he knew about the expected arrest. In his postings, he repeated his lies that the 2020 presidential election he lost to Democrat Joe Biden was stolen and he urged his followers to “PROTEST, TAKE OUR NATION BACK!” That language evoked the message from the then-president that preceded the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Law enforcement officials in New York have been making security preparations for the possibility that Trump could be indicted.

While discussing prosecutors from the Manhattan district attorney’s office convening a grand jury as part of a criminal probe into a 2016 hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels that Trump allegedly authorized, anchor Chris Hayes asked, “Given what has come out about what was happening in the Department of Justice behind the curtains at the time, give the fact that you went and pleaded to and did some time for this particular crime, what do you think about the fact that the charges may finally happen and be happening from the district attorney’s office and not from the Department of Justice?

Cohen said, “It doesn’t make a difference to me whether or not he is charged by the DOJ, the Southern District of New York, or the District Attorney of New York at the end of the day, it’s really all about accountability. That’s what I think America wants to see because Donald has managed to escape accountability his entire life, and the rest of us that have been around him all seem to be the ones who get thrown under the bus.”

An attorney for Donald Trump says the former president would not refuse to surrender to authorities if he is indicted in the Manhattan district attorney’s probe into a hush-money deal from his 2016 presidential run.

“There won’t be a standoff at Mar-a-Lago with Secret Service and the Manhattan DA’s office,” Joe Tacopina told The New York Daily News.

Tacopina said Trump, whom he described as a survivor, would find a way to use any charges filed against him to help him politically in the end.

“Most people would collapse under the weight of this,” he said. “He seems to turn everything into a positive and everything into a boost for his campaign, so I’m sure this will just join that long list of things that people think no one could overcome, but he will.”

Indeed. If paying people for nondisclosure is illegal, then we are in big trouble because nondisclosure agreements are negotiated and executed routinely in this country.  This is clearly a political prosecution.

    Former President Donald Trump will follow the normal procedure in surrendering to face criminal charges if indicted by a Manhattan grand jury, his lawyer said.

    The lawyer, Joseph Tacopina, spoke on the heels of a report by WNBC that federal, state and local law enforcement agencies are preparing for the possibility that Trump will be indicted as early as next week.

    Trump is under criminal investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office in connection to a hush money payment his former personal attorney Michael Cohen made to porn star Stormy Daniels shortly before the 2016 presidential election.

NEW YORK (AP) — Law enforcement officials in New York are making security preparations for the possibility that former President Donald Trump could be indicted in the coming weeks and appear in a Manhattan courtroom in an investigation examining hush money paid to women who alleged sexual encounters with him, four law enforcement officials said Friday.

There has been no public announcement of any timeframe for the grand jury’s secret work, including any potential vote on whether to indict the ex-president.

The law enforcement officials, who were not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, said authorities are just preparing in case of an indictment. They described the conversations as preliminary and are considering security, planning and the practicalities of a potential court appearance by a former president.

Trump’s lawyer, Joseph Tacopina, told The Associated Press that if Trump is indicted, “we will follow the normal procedures.”

The Manhattan district attorney’s office had no comment. A message was left for court administrators.

This offense could be elevated to a felony if done to commit or conceal a second crime, in this case a potential violation of campaign finance laws. I've been asked by multiple reporters if an indictment would lead me to rescind my endorsement of Donald Trump. The answer is: hell no. A politically motivated prosecution makes the argument for Trump stronger. We simply don't have a real country if justice depends on politics.

A former federal prosecutor warned Saturday that former President Donald Trump's social media post sharing details of his expected arrest could see him denied bail.

Trump claimed on his Truth Social account that the Manhattan DA's office will arrest him on Tuesday -  and branded the probe 'corrupt and highly political', calling the alleged hush money payment an 'old and fully debunked fairy-tale.'

Glenn Kirschner, an MSNBC legal analyst, has compared the all-caps rant to his posts leading up to the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021 - and said it could affect the terms of his release.

He speculated that a judge could interpret Trump's post as an attempt to incite a crowd to riot - raising the specter of him being held behind bars to prevent him posting further inflammatory communications ahead of any trial. 

'I would slap a government exhibits sticker on this post and I would introduce it as his criminal trial,' Kirschner explained.

'He has now just given the judge that will preside over his arraignment hearing food for thought about what kind of conditions should be set for the release of this dangerous man pending trial,' he added.
