We had a pair of those "energy efficient" washers and dryers.
The clothes were just not getting as clean.
On the spin cycle that front loader ate t-shirts and other garments.
The drain line on the washer was prone to plugging, as it also sucked little socks into it, trapped them, and plugged the line. Unfortunately, to get the socks out of the line, the entire contents of the washer had to be drained, and that was a pain in the ass. Then the 'brain' went on the fritz, first on the washer, then on the dryer, after it caught fire (poor workmanship caused a buildup of fine dust throughout the inside of the cabinet, which was finally ignited by the element). That was the end of that crap. We threw them out.
Screw efficiency, water is not in short supply here.
We found a industrial grade high capacity top loader, I changed out the pump, and it has been running just fine for years. I replaced a few parts on that old speed queen dryer, and it is still going strong. The total cost for both units (not counting my labor) was less than the 'high efficiency' dryer alone, and the results are much better.
If all else fails, I have a tub and a washboard, and a few bars of Fels Naptha...
