Trump Super PAC Hits Ron DeSantis With 'Shadow Presidential Campaign' Ethics Complaint

It would seem Donald Trump’s allies aren’t going to let up on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and have now filed a new ethics complaint over what they say is a “shadow presidential campaign.”

According to NBC News, a 15-page complaint was filed by Make America Great Again Inc with the Florida Commission on Ethics that claims DeSantis has been accumulating wealth with the intention of running for President at the expense of Florida taxpayers:

    DeSantis is widely expected to run for president but has not yet formally announced. The complaint alleges, however, that he has already checked all the boxes for someone considering a run for the White House, including making stops in early primary states; writing a book (his is titled “The Courage to Be Free”); raising tens of millions of dollars to go into a state-level committee that could be transferred to a federal super PAC; and watching a constellation of supporter-led super PACs and an outside nonprofit group pop up, some with the stated intention of getting DeSantis to run for president.

    The pro-Trump super PAC says those steps, when taken together, violate a handful of Florida laws about officeholders’ accepting illegal gifts.

The complaint would find its legs using Florida’s “resign-to-run” law which requires Florida politicians to resign if they’re campaigning for offices in which the first term would overlap with the current office’s ongoing term. The Florida legislature has toyed with the law in the past, changing it in order to pave the way for various Florida politicians to obtain higher office.

I think they want to force his hand actually, to get him to say he's running or not...there's some benefit in that, otherwise they wouldn't be doing this. They probably think he benefits from the ambiguity. So they want the ball back in their court.
