Trump vows to protect seniors from Republicans like Paul Ryan 'disciple' DeSantis

by Katherine Doyle, White House Reporter
March 13, 2023 09:36 PM

Former President Donald Trump vowed to protect seniors from “establishment” Republicans if returned to the White House, attacking a top would-be rival on Social Security and Medicare in his first trip to Iowa of the 2024 campaign.

Trump’s focus on entitlements suggests he believes his populist message lends him an edge over the Republican hopefuls weighing their prospects for the nomination.

In Davenport, Trump likened Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) to the failed GOP 2008 presidential nominee, Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT), whom he maligned as a member of “the Paul Ryan Republican establishment,” leaning into a distinction that helped propel the former leader to victory in 2016.

While in Congress, DeSantis “wanted to decimate” Social Security, “severely” cut Medicare spending, and lift the retirement age to 70 years old, Trump said on Monday, noting, “Ron was a disciple of Paul Ryan [who] would constantly vote against entitlements.”

Trump added, “You remember … Democrats used that ‘wheelchair over the cliff' commercial? Very effective. That was about him.”

Trump is making it crystal clear that he has absolutely no desire to try to reign in spending

And should he be elected by some miracle, he won’t have the luxury of low interest rates to help hide the true cost of government
I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.

I don't recall DeSantis ever endorsing McCain or Ryan.

If only we can be saved from the evil Trump, we might just be able to be saved by 4 more years of the god saint Biden.  This will be the second time that crap was tried, and the mega secret ?  The second 4 years of Biden being far worse than the first four years.  Will useful fools EVER learn?
Biden wins a second term, more useful fools will go into hiding, as useful fools well should!
Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. Except these types don't ever want to ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR SHAME.

And what's so outrageous about it is that reforming Social Security can be done by changing things for people who are not seniors.  Everyone knows that, but they push the wheelchair imagery anyway because it works politically.

Trump supporters are like the socialist

When you show college age socialist the failures of Socialism, they believe it failed because the right people weren’t in charge

Trump supporters believe that if Trump borrows and spends, it’ll be on America, so therefore, there will be no negative economic effects

Again, the tragedy would be that Donald Trump could end up pulling the other Republican primary opponents to the left on spending which we no longer can afford

There was one point during the primary in 2016 where Trump said we should borrow as much as we can because interest rates are low. Ted Cruz pointed out that those low interest rates were only hiding the true cost of government and they wouldn’t stay low forever.

   That's BS RiV.
Myst don't let lefties in here because she knows we'll chew them up and spit them out, quickly bored.
The majority of that of which you so easily slander are Concervatives (with a big 'C'), not Trump style populist.

There is a difference, IMO, from those that voted for Trump for whatever reason vs the big government populist.

There are many who voted for him but have issue with his spending

It's the true believers that are the problem. They either will ignore any and all questions related to the 7.8 trillion added under his watch or make outlandish claims of victimhood

I don't know. Maybe they believe that that was too low and he needs another term so he can oversee another 10 trillion tacked on to the debt

Trump isn't pushing for any reforms to SS and Medicare. He's promising to not touch them at all and to go after anyone who even discusses reforms  and that's no longer an option

I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.

It was difficult to hear, @Right_in_Virginia .  Can you please provide the time stamp of the video where DeSantis endorsed Ryan?  Thanks in advance.

We had no problem hearing the full video @Hoodat   Maybe check your settings?  You know, so you can hear Ron endose Ryan, by name, as the author of the social security legislation he was voting for.

Listened to it again.  And again, I don't hear any endorsement of Paul Ryan.  So for a third time, can you please provide the quote where DeSantis endorsed Ryan?  I already provided you with the quote where Trump personally endorsed Ryan.

Trump always struck me as more of a Mr. Haney than a Mr. Douglas on Green Acres, you know put his Name on anything AND sell it, excluding the 6 Bankruptcies, he did pretty dam good.

Incidentally, I found the missing TimeStamp.

Interesting you keep missing this when we can clearly hear Ronny endosing Ryan, the author of the legislation, as a reason for voting for it.

Since the quote snippet was taken out of context and mixed in with other snippets from different time frames for the expressed purpose of deceiving people here, and also since the quote snippet does not at all show an endorsement of Paul Ryan, in direct contrast to the habitually false statement provided by one poster here ( @Right_in_Virginia ), I have tracked down the full statement from one Ronald DeSantis from 2012, back when Trump was giving money to Kathy Hochul and Kamala Harris.

Quote
I would not change Social Security and Medicare for people who are on the program or near retirement at 55 or over.  Just because I think that there are settled expectations there, particularly for people who are actually on it now.  You know, they've basically planned their life around that.  So I wouldn't make changes along those lines, but what I think we need to do for people in my generation particularly is to restructure the program in a way that is going to be financially sustainable - both Social Security and Medicare.  The cost issue with Medicare is that there is no sensitivity to price.  I mean, you basically go in, it's kind of an open-ended entitlement.  Things are paid for.  And I would want me, kind of as a younger guy you know, to know that OK you know you're going to have Medicare, but then I think you're gonna - you should I think - should have to also provide for myself in certain respects.  And if I want kind of a really grand policy, then I should be contributing to that over and above what Medicare has because you know right now Medicare really goes up more that Social Security does even.  And so I think if we reformed it for people in my generation, you know you wouldn't see any savings immediately in the budget.  But I think the long term picture would then improve dramatically.  And I think that's important because if you're talking about a debt crisis or something, I mean it's not just what you're doing right now; but it's also people are going to see what's going on in the future, and that's where it really gets bad for us.  So I would embrace proposals like Paul Ryan offered and other people offered that are going to provide some market forces in there, more consumer choice,  and make it so that it is not basically a system that's gonna be bankrupt when you have new people coming into it.

Social Security, you know, I would do the same thing.  Social Security is actually not as bad as Medicare in the sense that .  .  .  .

Again, there is no Paul Ryan endorsement there.  None.  The only one offering a Paul Ryan endorsement was Donald Trump.  Go figure.

So back in 2012 when Donald Trump was still stroking checks to Democrats, Ron DeSantis was preaching solid Conservatism.  No wonder you hate him so.

Thanks for making me look that up.  It makes me even more certain of supporting him if he chooses to run.
