California will no longer require COVID vaccines for K-12 students
School children in California will no longer be required to have a coronavirus (COVID) vaccine to attend school, according to state public health officials. The Friday announcement will end one of the last major restrictions of the pandemic in the state.
The policy was first introduced in 2021 aiming to apply to all 6.7 million students in public and private schools statewide.
The state's COVID emergency declaration officially ends on Feb. 28 and, with it, so does the vaccine mandate. Almost all of Gov. Gavin Newsom's pandemic restrictions have been lifted, and he won’t be able to issue any new ones after the emergency declaration ends.
The Department of Public Health confirms this move, but also shares they still recommend children getting vaccinated.
