EPA pausing the disposal of toxic waste from East Palestine, including waste headed to Houston area
The disposal of toxic waste from the East Palestine, Ohio, train derailment fire into Houston and Harris County will be paused, U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee announced Saturday afternoon.
The federal Environmental Protection Agency is pausing the disposal of an estimated 1.1 million gallons of hazardous waste into a disposal facility in Harris County days after local leaders reassured residents they were monitoring the situation.
"Congresswoman Jackson Lee has worked intensely with the EPA and EPA Administrator for the last few days to protect communities from toxic waste disposal," a statement released Saturday from Lee's Twitter account said. "This process of dumping toxic waste in communities without prior notice to local cities and counties has to stop."
As of Thursday, more than 1.7 million gallons of the contaminated liquid had been removed from the immediate site of the derailment, according to Ohio EPA spokesperson James Lee. While the majority of waste was headed 1,300 miles to Deer Park Emergency Management, a smaller amount went to Vickery Environmental in Vickery, Ohio, Lee said.
