EPA pausing the disposal of toxic waste from East Palestine, including waste headed to Houston area

The disposal of toxic waste from the East Palestine, Ohio, train derailment fire into Houston and Harris County will be paused, U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee announced Saturday afternoon.

The federal Environmental Protection Agency is pausing the disposal of an estimated 1.1 million gallons of hazardous waste into a disposal facility in Harris County days after local leaders reassured residents they were monitoring the situation.

"Congresswoman Jackson Lee has worked intensely with the EPA and EPA Administrator for the last few days to protect communities from toxic waste disposal," a statement released Saturday from Lee's Twitter account said. "This process of dumping toxic waste in communities without prior notice to local cities and counties has to stop."

As of Thursday, more than 1.7 million gallons of the contaminated liquid had been removed from the immediate site of the derailment, according to Ohio EPA spokesperson James Lee. While the majority of waste was headed 1,300 miles to Deer Park Emergency Management, a smaller amount went to Vickery Environmental in Vickery, Ohio, Lee said.

I have said on another thread, that the Houston area, and in particular certain TSD facilites in Harris County, are among the best, most adept. and safest handlers of hazardous waste in the entire world.    Believe me....  they handle much much worse, and dangerous materials than dilluted wastewater on a 24/7 basis.

This opinion comes from decades of experience in this field.

So only in the ultimately stupid mind of SJL, does throwing beaucratic roadblocks help protect a population, who needs to get rid of their contaminants.

Want to know what the real red flags are?  Shipping waste water 1500 miles  is not a normal and cost effectve practice.  Our government/this rail road is probably hiding the fact that torching the spill (which was a blunder of biblical proportions, in the environmental profession)  created some serious Dioxin-laden plumes.
I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.

Michigan, Texas officials unaware Ohio contaminated soil, water, taken to their areas: 'We were sandbagged'
A Michigan congresswoman said that officials weren't 'given a heads up'

By Adam Sabes | Fox News

Officials from Texas and Michigan say they were unaware that soil and water from the site of the East Palestine, Ohio, freight train derailment was being taken to their areas.

A Norfolk Southern train with 50 rail cars, 10 of which were carrying vinyl chloride, derailed in East Palestine on Feb. 3. The derailment caused hazardous chemicals to spill onto the ground and sent a plume of smoke into the air.

Days after the derailment, officials conducted a controlled release of chemicals to avoid the risk of an explosion. Residents were evacuated before officials conducted the release, but have since been allowed back.

Wastewater and soil from the site of the derailment was taken to hazardous waste companies in both Texas and Michigan, and some officials claim that they didn't get any notice.

  • I don't believe in Trump anymore, he's an illusion
The only reason Lee would get involved would be to make sure that none of the hazmat was transported through areas where 'people of color' reside, she is probably insisting that the EPA transports it through White neighborhoods only.

Nobody wants this stuff.

What if a transport hauling it off to "somewhere else" wrecks in transit...?

Contaminated waste shipments from East Palestine derailment to resume

Cincinnati.com 2/26/2023

Shipment of contaminated waste from the site of a fiery train derailment earlier this month in eastern Ohio near the Pennsylvania state line will resume Monday to two approved sites in Ohio, according to federal environmental authorities.

The announcement came a day after the Environmental Protection Agency ordered Norfolk Southern to “pause” shipments from the site of the Feb. 3 derailment in East Palestine to allow additional oversight measures about where waste was shipped. Some liquid and solid waste had already been taken to sites in Michigan and Texas.

EPA-certified facilities able to accept some of the waste had been identified, which meant shipments could restart Monday, Region 5 administrator Debra Shore, of the Environmental Protection Agency, said Sunday.
