Vladimir Putin Uses 'Historic' Speech to Whine, Suspend the New START Treaty, and Whine Some More

Through several days of promotion of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s Anniversary of the War I Started Speech, it was teased that he would “declare war” and order a total mobilization among other things.

In the event, he delivered a somnolent, meandering, almost whiny speech to mark the first anniversary of his unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

It was a combination of a state of the union speech (“extend the Moscow-Kazan expressway to Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, and Tyumen, and eventually to Irkutsk and Vladivostok with branches to Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and China”), a rationale for the “special military operation,” and a shift in foreign policy back to the Cold War.

Here are the highlights.

We’ve Heard This Before

Putin laid out his justification for the war. We’ve heard it before. Good Russia tried to work with Bad NATO but was rebuffed. Bad NATO goes around starting wars. Bad NATO is really a vehicle for Evil America to dominate the world. Good Russia had to invade to protect the Good Russians in Ukraine from attacks by Nazi Ukraine. Good Russia was only supporting the UN Charter and human rights.

None of this is worth the effort of addressing. However, I’m sure some of the commenters here will sign onto it — though I do note he doesn’t mention the favorite subject of one commenter, which is the vile Polish plan to invade and annex Western Ukraine. If you want to believe that version of events, I’m sure Tucker Carlson will be glad to have you on to talk about it.

They Started the War; We Will End It
Putin engaged in his usual bluster about the course of the war.
