How outside groups are boosting DeSantis before a possible 2024 bid

BY BRETT SAMUELS - 02/10/23 6:00 AM ET

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) may still be months away from announcing a 2024 presidential bid, but multiple outside groups are putting in the work in the meantime to make sure he can hit the ground running.

Three different super PACs have emerged in recent months backing DeSantis as a 2024 candidate. The goal, according to the people behind the efforts, is to build up volunteers and infrastructure so an eventual DeSantis campaign isn’t at a disadvantage if and when he officially launches his campaign.

That could prove especially critical for DeSantis, who as Florida governor is one of the only potential 2024 candidates whose travel and involvement in early primary states is limited by his day job.

“He’s kind of handicapped by the fact he’s got a legislative session that’s going to last a couple months here,” said Ed Rollins, chief strategist for the “Ready for Ron” super PAC and a veteran of numerous Republican campaigns.

Same here.  Haven't been this supportive of a candidate since Reagan.

So far, DeSantis is my choice.

Americans want someone who is confrontational.

Rollins is one of the last surviving Reagan era politico-forces still active, and he was big in Reagan's '84 victory.

Let's hope he can help work some more 1984 magic.

So Rollins is saying tat there will be a couple of months where DeSantis will be busy with state business but Trump will still be free to say stupid things?

Exactly.  Trump declared in June 2015.  The idea that DeSantis has to declare now or fall behind schedule is ridiculous.

Better to stay out as long as possible and walk in clean months from now.

Right.  Let Trump do Trump and keep alienating more of those who voted for him in the last two elections.

From a policy standpoint, Trump did fine work, but he turned off way too many swing voters in 2018 for the midterms and the 2020 election.  DeSantis is a proven winner who can bring in voters that Trump cannot.  Besides… Trump will be approaching 78 by the 2024 election.  Contrary to what he and his followers think, he’s not going to be elected President again.

Starting to see the old Cruz core coalescing around DeSantis.

Funny how that goes, eh?

DeSantis is my choice.

I haven't decided on who I will support and won't until the primaries are looming large.

I voted for Trump because of the Supreme Court - I didn't trust him to be conservative on any other issue.  I do and did support his tax bill, and opposition to open borders.

But I really don't see what he'd do moving forward.  I don't think he believes in fiscal conservativism at all, and would be happy to spend money if it boosts his popularity.  I also don't think he cares about social issues.

I think almost any Republican would give us  comparable justices - though I do think DeSantis gets an edge there because he understands the judiciary better than the rest.  Other than that, as long as they want strong borders, I think all of them would be as good as Trump, if not better, on policy.

No, not any... Any from the Conservative side of the spectrum would do better... but not *any*. The RINO side could be capable of much worse... Not that Tumpy gets points for that - He was bad enough.
