Remarks from Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders’s (R) GOP Response to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union Address:

Good evening. I’m Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

Being a mom to three young children taught me not to believe every story I hear. So forgive me for not believing much of anything I heard tonight from President Biden. From out-of-control inflation and violent crime to the dangerous border crisis and threat from China, Biden and the Democrats have failed you.

They know it. And you know it.

It’s time for a change.

Tonight, let us reaffirm our commitment to a timeless American idea: that government exists not to rule the people, but to serve the people.

Democrats want to rule us with more government control, but that is not who we are. America is the greatest country the world has ever known because we are the freest country the world has ever known, with a people who are strong and resilient.

Five months ago, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. It was a hard time for our family, particularly for our kids – Scarlett, Huck, and George – but we kept our faith and persevered.

Thanks to exceptional doctors here in Arkansas, a successful surgery, and the grace of God, I am cancer-free.

Through it all, I couldn’t help but think about my mom.

If you just listened to the first 10 or 20 minutes of President Joe Biden’s rambling State of the Union speech on Tuesday, there was plenty to loathe — although it was a pretty pro forma affair.

The quick version: Spending. Infrastructure. Spending. Infrastructure. Spending. Manufacturing. Spending. Inflation isn’t my fault. Spending. Tax the rich. Spending. Spending. Lots and lots of spending.

The stuff you really weren’t going to like was loaded toward the end of the speech, where most Americans likely figured they’d heard all they would hear from the president. That’s when he addressed Ukraine, the border crisis, the amorphous “threat to democracy” that Republicans pose, and a plea to pass legislation that would federalize the right to abortion on demand and to allow transgender therapies and procedures to be performed on minors.

Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) shouted, “It’s your fault,” at President Joe Biden during the State of the Union Address when he raised concerns about fentanyl deaths.

“Fentanyl is killing more than 70,000 Americans a year,” Biden said before being interrupted by boos.

“It’s your fault,” Ogles yelled while Biden grinned at the Republican side of the aisle.

“Let’s launch a major surge to stop fentanyl production, sale, and trafficking, with more drug detection machines to inspect cargo and stop pills and powder at the border,” Biden continued. “Working with couriers like Fed Ex to inspect more packages for drugs. Strong penalties to crack down on fentanyl trafficking.”

"Tonight, President Biden delivered his second State of the Union address. For West Virginia families, the message fell flat. President Biden’s policies are reckless, and his administration is taking a holiday from reality. Whether it’s soaring inflation that harms the pocketbooks of every day middle class families, President Biden’s humiliating withdrawal from Afghanistan, his willingness to allow the Chinese Communist Party to invade and violate American sovereignty, or his radical far-left agenda that serves as a complete repudiation to the values of traditional Americans and West Virginians, President Biden just isn’t up to the job. He has failed the American people time and time again.

Unfortunately, and shamefully, President Biden’s radical agenda has been enabled by a West Virginian. Senator Joe Manchin votes with President Biden 88% of the time, and he votes with Chuck Schumer 92% of the time. During his State of the Union address, President Joe Biden made several notable claims. The Daily Signal team checked them out to see if the facts add up—or if some crucial context was missing.

1. Inflation Reduction Act and Health Care Costs
Biden touted the $740 billion spending bill Democrats dubbed the Inflation Reduction Act, claiming during his State of the Union address Tuesday night that the new law will decrease health care costs.

“With the Inflation Reduction Act that I signed into law, we’re taking on powerful interests to bring your health care costs down so you can sleep better at night,” the president said. “You know, we pay more for prescription drugs than any major country on Earth.”

Biden said big pharmaceutical companies could no longer make record profits by hiking up prices.

“This law also caps out-of-pocket drug costs for seniors on Medicare at a maximum $2,000 per year when there are in fact many drugs, like expensive cancer drugs, that can cost up to $10,000, $12,000, and $14,000 a year,” Biden said. “If drug prices rise faster than inflation, drug companies will have to pay Medicare back the difference.”
