Democrats seek reparations, ‘national apology’ for slavery: ‘We are moving closer’
The bill makes no recommendation on what kind of payment and should be offered or how a national apology would be issued

By Peter Kasperowicz | Fox News

Dozens of House Democrats this week renewed their push for reparations and a national apology for slavery by reintroducing legislation that would set up a commission to consider these steps as way to address the "cruelty, brutality, and inhumanity of slavery" in the U.S.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, and 52 House Democrats proposed the legislation this week in an effort to keep the issue alive. Her legislation, which was considered by the House Judiciary Committee in the last Congress when Democrats were in charge, is unlikely to taken up in the 118th Congress led by Republicans.

Still, Jackson Lee said she is hopeful a commission can be formed not just to recommend monetary compensation, but to help America understand how slavery still affects the country today.

As I've previously predicted in this forum more than once, "reparations" is quickly going to become a new "movement", a modern-day equivalent (or at least purported to be) of "civil rights". Touted as "an idea whose time has come".

I doubt anything will happen before the 2024 elections, due to the Republican House which MIGHT be able to resist such an onslaught.

But expect this to become a BIG campaign issue then.
Also expect further pressure due to the upcoming Supreme Court decision in June that substantially restricts affirmative action, or abolishes it altogether.

Democrats are going to issue an apology to the nation for slavery and pay reparations?  Sounds like the right thing for them to do.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

Who should we apologize to? Those that were enslaved? I don't think any remain alive.

Reparations could come from the slave holders. What's that you say? They are dead as well?

There are many ethnicities, genders and peoples that have been persecuted and enslaved in one way or another. So we could all just pay reparations to one another. Or better yet...we could all just move on.

No.  Reparations should come from Democrats.

  • Dems-greatest existential threat to USA republic!
The concept of reparations is completely bogus.  Reparations for blacks, most of which in the USA are descended from free men that came to America or came directly to the USA as free men?  Hell no.

Next it will be reparations for the Native American population.  Casinos will just not be enough.

And then reparations for every Hispanic that has spent generations being denigrated in this white supremacist society.

And then reparations for the Asian Indians brought here to work at half the salary and no benefits.

And then reparations for all the Jews that suffered more torment than any other demographic.

And then reparations for all Puerto Ricans for being denied independence from this white supremacist controlled nation.

And then there are my people, the Irish, who were brought as slaves to the USA in the form of indenture, and treated as bad or worse than any group of Jews.  When do I get my reparations?

And then there are the reparations for every other demographic I might be missing, and I sure as hell do not want to leave anyone out.

Can someone please put an end to the Idiocracy that is so pervasive in Washington?  Is there a bigger idiot in Washington than Rep Sheila Jackson Lee?  Well, excluding Rep Hank Johnson, who thought Guam would capsize if we put too many troops on the island, or more recently that Biden was setup with these Top Secret documents being planted in multiple Biden facilities.

If these two morons are not proof positive we need higher requirements for being elected to office in Washington, I don't know what is.  And then there is AOC, who makes a valley girl sound like a genius.  And I could go on.

My Great Great Grandfather fought for the Union, to end slavery.  He lost a leg in that battle.  Shouldn't there be reparations for every family that lost loved ones fighting a war to end the obscenity of slavery?

At what point do the pukes we elect begin focusing on the American people?  I don't want to hear one more word about race in this country.  Where can blacks go to find a better life?  What African country is better?  Yeah, not one stinking African country presents a better life.  Not one.

As I remember my history, it was democrats who fought the North with Abraham Lincoln (Republican) in the Civil War and reconstruction.  That continued until the Dixiecrats fought anything to do with black civil rights.  And shouldn't the 100,000 or so black slave owners families pay a larger proportion for their enslavement of their fellow blacks?  Some people in here have already suggested democrats should pay any reparations and I agree. :yowsa:

No.  Reparations should come from Democrats.

They are one and the same.

Only Democrats owned slaves in America. Only Democrats were KKK members. Only Democrats imposed Jim Crow laws and lynched black people.

They are the ones who owe reparations. Most of them are dead now, but their followers want to enslave the rest of us.

They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. -Alexander Solzhenitsyn

I'll donate my entire net worth for reparations to all the slaves me, my parents, grandparents, and my great grandparents owned.

And after that, I'll expect the same from the purge of the Lowlander Scots in the 17th century to Ulster, and if there is no statute of limitiations for the actions in 1066 against Anglo-Saxon peoples

Sounds ridiculous?  Yeah, it does trying to bilk and grift for actions of ancestors 100's of years ago.  So STFU.

Comrade jafo complains:
"At what point do the pukes we elect begin focusing on the American people?  I don't want to hear one more word about race in this country."

Then it is YOU who had better do "the moving", comrade.
The isolated clamors for "reparations" will soon grow into an increasing caterwaul heard nationwide.

Once again, Fishrrman's dialectic:
You may not be interested in the politics of race, identity, and ethnicity.
But the politics of race, identity, and ethnicity are VERY MUCH interested... in YOU.

Letting go of that victimhood is very tough in the intersectional world of the left. Blacks have a very high status because of what happened to their ancestors more than 160 years ago. Also, it is pretty good excuse for why life hasn't worked out.

I think the better approach is the attitude of the pro football coach who was asked how big a deal it was that he is Black and the head coach on the other team that he just played is Black. He responded to the effect that it would stop being a big deal when people stopped asking the question.

There it is. Until we abandon the hyphenations that have dominated the discussion for the last 50 years, division will remain emphasized.

As for apologies, I am only sorry that those who have been free have continued to live under the penumbra of the past. It is a pity that those who teach children have focused on long past negatives, and not the triumphs of those, some even born in bondage long ago, since. I firmly believe that emphasis has hampered the sort of growth experienced by peoples who have come here, learned the language on the fly and become productive and flourished. As for slavery, every people on this planet have, at some point, been held in such captivity. It is only the ability of those to seek freedom in their hearts and minds that frees them from that shadow to thrive. If you live under that penumbra of the past, free yourself. Look around at others who have done so and seek those means for yourself, not through another's sweat and toil, but through your own. The means are there.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

With all the attention being paid to illegals, the left seems to have decided to take some of the heat off by starting to refocus, dishonestly, on their "concern" for blacks.  Illegals are getting all sorts of benefits and live in five-star hotels while blacks live on the street.  The homage they pay illegals is coming to bite them. :yowsa:

I hereby retract anything ever said about one or two of my ancestors in Virginia having held slaves. I was mistaken,  honest. No one in my family tree owned slaves. In fact (in Joe Biden fashion) my ancestors  actually  were slaves - who went to Mass and African American  church every single day and kept their Corvettes locked up.

Will that mark me safe from paying reparations to people who never experienced slavery?

Of course this will come to pass.  The government is passing out free money.  Just like the COVID money, everyone took it.  This just so happens to benefit one particular group.
