In a memo to colleagues, Sanchez and Abney noted that high-capacity semi-automatic rifles in the style of or similar to an AR-15 were found at the mass shooting sites of an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas; an Orlando nightclub; an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut; a Texas church, a high school in Parkland, Florida; and the Tree Of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh.

"Although the issue of assault weapons remains an emotionally and politically charged issue on both sides of the argument, this legislation would help keep our communities safe," the two lawmakers said in a joint statement. "Pennsylvania needs to address this major public safety issue by effectively banning the possession, purchase, transfer, use or manufacture of an assault weapon."
