@Kamaji Well,that wasn't that long ago,it just SEEMS like it was.
I am old enough to remember when SOME grocery stores would take "call in orders" and then deliver the groceries to your house for free. You WERE expected,of course,to tip the driver/delivery man,but back in the days when most families only had one car and "mom" remained at home it was either do this or call a cab to take you to the grocery store,and then call another cab to take you back home.
Hell,we even charged the groceries,and I would ride to the grocery store on my bicycle on Friday night or Saturday morning to pay the grocery bill.
When we moved back to where my parents came from in the early 60's,we STILL charged our groceries and paid the bill every Friday night or Saturday morning,but the difference was my father had to drive there because it was too far for me to bicycle.
I could very well be wrong about this,but I think most working-class families back then did the same thing.
