I'm a very heavy reader but I have read less than a dozen novels.
Kafka is the exception. I have read most of his stuff starting with
Metamorphosis.

In the unfinished Castle, he wrote how dedicated the managers were.
They worked through the night they were so dedicated. He couldn't
say the work was torturing people. Too bad it was unfinished.
He is comparable with Solzhenitsyn.

Besides a great author Kafka was a great man.

Technology is always improving, I doubt that right now any MickeyD's can run without humans, someone needs to unload trucks and organize product, fill the bins with product on fryers, toasters and grills, etc. and get things into a washer and maintain the grounds. I will tell you that the push for automation and elimination of 'extra' cash siphons(non productive workers) has been going on for decades. Even when I was managing, and that was 25 years ago the push for automated fry machines that require only human loading of raw product and bagging was being used along with self oil filtering fryers. In 25 years robotics and mechanical advances have come a long way so I have no doubt that a location that used to have a human staff of say 50 could in an operation like this be reduced to a fifth. Also non CC payments could be handled the same way as say a soda machine or self check POS in a grocery store or Walmart.
