Trump's dinner disaster sparks new rules for his campaign

Donald Trump is betting he can win his way back to the White House by reviving the outsider appeal that fueled his success in 2016.

But his dinner with a Holocaust-denying white nationalist and a rapper who has spewed antisemitic conspiracies is demonstrating the risks of that approach. It underscores the dangers of his limited campaign operation and leaves the former president subject to stinging criticism from fellow Republicans who increasingly see him as a liability for their party after a lackluster showing in this year's midterm elections.

In an acknowledgment of the severity of the backlash and an effort to prevent a repeat, Trump's campaign is putting new protocols in place to ensure that those who meet with him are approved and fully vetted, according to people familiar with the plans who requested anonymity to share internal strategy. The changes will include expediting a system, borrowed from Trump’s White House, in which a senior campaign official will be present with him at all times, according to one of the people...............

Some aides had advised Trump against meeting with Ye, who has made his own antisemitic comments. But the two have a longstanding relationship and Trump rebuffed the advice. They were supposed to meet one-on-one in the club’s library, but Trump, eager to show off his celebrity guest to his paying club members, decided to divert the group to the club’s main patio dining area. Fuentes joined the dinner at Ye's invitation.

"Trump rebuffed the advice".  That has been a long standing problem with Trump, he doesn't listen to advice. His second problem has always been not selecting good people to surround himself with.

He will now have someone babysitting him; a senior campaign official will be with him at all times.  Will it make any difference?  Trump is Trump and he's going to do what he's going to do and also make comments off the cuff.

Former President Trump’s campaign is increasing its vetting protocols following his widely criticized dinner with white nationalist Nick Fuentes, sources told The Associated Press.

A senior campaign official will be present with Trump at all times, one of the sources said.

Fuentes attended a dinner at Mar-a-Lago last week with Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West. Ye was set to have a private dinner with the former president, but arrived with three guests, one of whom was Fuentes, Trump has said.

Fuentes and Ye were driven to the estate by Karen Giorno, a former Trump campaign adviser from Florida, according to NBC News, which also reported screening at Mar-a-Lago will be increased. The network noted that Giorno said she used a credit card to prove her identity since she had forgotten her driver’s license and said she was waved in because she had Ye in the car and was herself a frequent visitor at Mar-a-Lago.

 Trump ‘highly unlikely’ to be president again over Kanye West-Nick Fuentes dinner: McConnell

Trump’s dinner last week with an outspoken anti-semite and white supremacist had disqualified him from holding future office. 

“First, let me just say that there is no room in the Republican Party for anti-semitism or white supremacy,” McConnell (R-Ky.) told reporters on Capitol Hill of the 76-year-old Trump’s Mar-a-Lago meal with Jew-hating hip-hop star Kanye West and white nationalist Nicholas Fuentes.

“Anyone meeting with people advocating that point of view, in my judgment, are highly unlikely to ever be elected president of the United States,” McConnell added before throwing in a jab at Trump’s nascent 2024 White House run: “And that would apply to all of the leaders in the party who will be seeking offices.”
