House to vote on legislation to avert railroad strike in move backed by Biden

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced on Monday that the House will move quickly to vote on legislation to implement a labor agreement between railroads and unions, shortly after President Joe Biden called on Congress to act quickly in order to stave off a strike that would damage the economy.

The legislation Biden is asking Congress to pass would adopt the tentative agreement approved by labor and management negotiators in September. Some union members have voted not to ratify the bargain, raising the threat of a strike after the Dec. 9 deadline.

"The deal provides a historic 24% pay raise for rail workers," a statement from Biden read. "It provides improved health care benefits. And it provides the ability of operating craft workers to take unscheduled leave for medical needs."

Biden Steamrolls Unions, Asks Congress to Force Contract to Avert Rail Strike

In September, President Biden called his administration's work with railroad companies and a dozen unions to avert a nationwide rail strike a "win for America." That supposedly winning deal unraveled last week when America's largest rail union voted to reject the deal. And now, after Biden and the White House told contradicting tales about how involved the president was in the latest attempt to negotiate a deal, he's thrown in the towel and admitted defeat in his efforts that saw him ultimately botch another attempt at leadership.

In a statement on Monday evening, President Biden announced that he was "calling on Congress to pass legislation immediately to adopt the Tentative Agreement between railroad workers and operators – without any modifications or delay – to avert a potentially crippling national rail shutdown."

The tentative agreement Biden mentioned is the one he took a victory lap for, but that members of the nation's largest rail union — along with a few additional smaller unions — voted to reject. That means that Biden is calling on Congress to enforce the agreement he spearheaded, despite the fact that union workers themselves don't want the deal in a move that significantly undermines the president's claims of supporting unions over the companies that employ workers.

Biden said he was making the move based on the recommendations and advice from his cabinet — specifically his Secretaries of Transportation, Agriculture, and Labor — because they saw "that there is no path to resolve the dispute at the bargaining table." So much for Democrats' commitment to supporting collective bargaining, huh?

One wonders if the unions will remember this mistreatment at the ballot box.

And what will Brandon do if the rail workers flip him and congress the bird and strike anyway, send the National Guard to round them up and force them to work? I love that an article says Brandon is following the recommendations of his cabinet members, specifically his transportation secretary Buttjigger who has been AWOL on any transportation issues.

That could get them into trouble, is my guess, since apparently Congress does have the power to legislate a collective bargaining agreement.

Uh-huh, you think they've got the balls to fire every railroad worker that strikes or disband the unions? I wonder just how far Brandon and Pelosi are willing to go and how much support they will have/lose over it?  :pondering: But then they have been importing an awful lot of Julios and Jorges that have no jobs.

Dock their pay, and keep docking it until they return to work, and jail the leaders.  Just how far are the rank-and-file willing to go and how much are they willing to lose.

Not the case with the railroads.
See the Railway Labor Act of 1926, which gives Congress the express power to do so.

They will either impose the existing proposal by law, or possibly force the parties into binding arbitration.

I believe the RLA also applies to the airline unions (or at least some of them, such as the pilots).

How many more union entities will support greed over national interests?  Dock workers and rail workers join a BLM union entity?  and who else?  Joe can cry like a helpless demented baby, and they usual useful fools can champion poor helpless victimized Joe, (while JOE fills his pockets with billions more of our money.  Useful fools will remain loyal, blind, stupid.  Its what they do best for 6 months to a year.
