Thanksgiving: A time for rainbow trout in Texas

The day before Thanksgiving marks the beginning of “rainbow trout season” in Texas.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department began its annual stocking of rainbow trout at 18 Neighborhood Fishin’ Lakes across the state, including four in the Houston area.

Burke Crenshaw Park in Pasadena, Community Park Lake in Missouri City, Mary Jo Peckham Park in Katy and Herman Little Park in Spring were scheduled to be stocked on Wednesday and several more times through March 3. The four parks are scheduled for eight stockings each throughout the winter, except Mary Jo Peckham Park, which will get an additional stocking on Jan. 13 for a total of nine. The park will also get more fish than any of the state's other Neighborhood Fishin’ Lakes, with over 6,300 trout expected.

Neighborhood Fishin’ Lakes are stocked regularly thanks to a partnership between cities and TPWD. These locations will get slightly bigger trout than the 8 to 10-inch fish that are stocked statewide. Approximately 42,000 trout, most between 10 and 12 inches, will be placed in Neighborhood Fishin’ Lakes across Texas.

Other notable Houston-area stockings include Burroughs Park in Tomball (Dec. 15 and Jan. 12), Beaver Pond in Cypress Creek Park (Dec. 21), George Bush Park in Katy (Jan. 13), Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve (Dec. 15 and Jan. 12), Eisenhower Park (Jan. 10 and Feb. 8), Arthur Storey Park (Jan. 13), Eldridge Park in Sugar Land (Jan. 19), Carl Barton Jr. Park in Conroe (Jan. 4 and Feb. 2), Mont Belvieu City Park (Jan. 29), Carver Park Lake in Texas City (Feb. 7) and more.

Fifteen state parks are scheduled to be stocked this winter, including Houston's Sheldon State Park (Children’s Pond #1 on Dec. 13 and Jan. 11) and Fort Boggy State Park near Centerville (Dec. 12 and Feb. 27).

TPWD is planning to stock about 338,000 trout at 204 sites across Texas. There will be over 400 stocking events, with many sites scheduled for multiple stockings.

Of all Texas’ stocking sites, one stands out from the rest: The Guadalupe River.
